A man visits the creators of Warhammer 40,000 in Nottingham, and suddenly there are rumors about the comeback of a legendary game series. And that’s only because he is wearing the right T-shirt.
What kind of game is it?
- Dawn of War is a strategy game series set in the dark sci-fi world of Warhammer 40,000.
- The first part was released in 2004 and is classic real-time strategy with base building and many different factions from the Warhammer world. It is considered one of the best strategy games on Steam.
- The sequels didn’t receive as much acclaim. Dawn of War 3 from 2017 was even discontinued just a few months after its release. Now there are hints of a return of the series.
Here comes the rumor: Dominik Dolenec visited Games Workshop in Nottingham in March 2025, the makers of Warhammer 40,000 (via LinkedIn). Dolenec is the managing partner at Emona Capital, which supports, among others, Relic Entertainment since they became independent.
Relic Entertainment is the studio behind Age of Empires 4 and Company of Heroes 3, but also the studio that developed Dawn of War. Dolenec posted a picture where he stands in front of a statue of a Space Marine while wearing a T-shirt with the Relic logo.
At Games Workshop, Dolenec apparently met with Owen Rees, who is responsible for licenses such as Warhammer. Already in the comments on LinkedIn, there were direct questions regarding a Dawn of War 4 or a remaster of the first part.
After the success of Space Marine 2, the head of Warhammer already stated, that Games Workshop is looking for the next big title in the franchise. A new Dawn of War installment would therefore not be excluded.
They certainly won’t let the franchise die – Not even after DoW 3
The first part of Dawn of War has a rating of 95% on Steam across all reviews, making it ‘extremely positive’. Fans have been calling for a remaster for years (via Reddit).
The reactions to Reddit right now are rather restrained, possibly because the game is already older and the series hasn’t really improved over time:
- Part 1 is generally regarded as the best part of the series
- Dawn of War 2 came with fewer base-building elements and new rules that did not please everyone
- The third and so far last part was discontinued just a few months after release; not even the first promised DLC has been released yet
Dawn of War 1 is now so old that fans could imagine receiving a full remake with a new engine, some updates, and new playable species. This apparently resonates with many in the community.
However, some fans believe: Games Workshop would not simply let the franchise die. And looking at the new Warhammer series featuring Henry Cavill, more games in Warhammer 40,000 would indeed make sense.
What exactly will come from Dolenec’s visit to Games Workshop, if anything at all, we cannot yet say. However, we do know for sure that a major sequel is already in the works: Genetically modified superhumans are the figureheads of Warhammer 40,000 and are now getting their third game
