Warframe has announced the date for the latest expansion. This is named “The New War” and will be released for free on December 15. MeinMMO tells you why especially long-time fans are reacting so emotionally.
Developer Digital Extremes has announced “The New War” as the latest expansion for the popular MMO shooter Warframe. The developers speak of the biggest and most ambitious expansion they have developed for Warframe so far. Much focus is placed on the story and its cinematic narration. But a new Warframe named Caliban has also been announced.
When is the expansion coming? “The New War” will be released on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 on Steam, Epic Games, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and Nintendo Switch. It is free like all Warframe expansions.
Expansion’s story makes fans emotional
What is the expansion about? In the story of “The New War”, besides the war from the title, it also revolves a lot around the relationship of the player to Lotus – the mother figure of the space ninjas that you play as in Warframe.
The trailer also confirms for the first time in the nearly 9-year history of Warframe the true identity of the playable character publicly. This leads to a very emotional encounter with Lotus at the end of the trailer. A deadly outcome is hinted at.
How does the community react? Fans are reacting very emotionally to these story hints. On the Warframe subreddit, the most popular post regarding the trailer is titled “Try not to Cry CGI Trailer Edition” (via reddit). The comments resonate with the same emotional tone:

New Warframe & Old Enemies Playable in Expansion
Is there a new Warframe? With “The New War” a new Warframe armor will also be released that you can play with. It is named Caliban and is the 48th Warframe in the game.
Caliban is a hybrid of a Warframe and the Sentient species. According to the official website, these are the abilities of the Warframe (via warframe.com):
- Blade Gyre:
Become a spinning whirlwind of death. Hold down fire to accelerate the maelstrom and increase damage, then aim at an enemy to charge at them. When you hit enemies affected by Sentient Wrath, you create a destructive explosion. - Sentient Wrath:
Strike the ground and send out a wave of destruction. Enemies not killed by the first shockwave are helplessly lifted into the air and continue to take damage for a short time. - Deadly Offspring:
Utilize Caliban’s Sentient aspect and summon up to three Conculysts to his side. Shields are repaired out of combat. - Fusion Strike:
Converge three streams of raw energy into a single point and create a massive reactive explosion. The explosion effect strips the armor off all enemies that are touched. - Adaptive Armor (Passive):
Allies within range gain increased resistance to the types of damage they are currently suffering.
What else is new? In “The New War” you will also be able to play characters from the ranks of the enemies. These characters are controllable in the mission:
- Kahl-175, a Grineer trooper
- The Corpus Tech Veso
- Tenshin, a Dax soldier
Digital Extremes promises that these 3 characters will all have their own abilities, which should provide varied gameplay.
Whether the expansion delivers what it promises will be revealed on December 15 at the earliest. Fans seem to be excited about what has been shown – despite tears in their eyes.
