In Warframe, wishes come true for fans of Destiny and Destiny 2. Codename Railjack aims to bring space battles to Warframe. This is exactly the kind of dog fights fans of Destiny and Destiny 2 have been wishing for over the past 4 years, but in vain. This shows a difference between AAA Destiny and indie Warframe, according to our author Schuhmann.
A long-held wish of Destiny fans: In the first-person shooter Destiny, players own their own spaceships. They have been able to collect them for 4 years. However, they have almost nothing to do with these spaceships. You only see them in the loading screen when the Guardian embarks on a new mission. Fans have long been demanding: “Bungie, let us do something with these spaceships. How about space battles, or we could live in the ships?”
“Do more with the spaceships in Destiny”: In 2014, the first players started asking for this (via Destiny Forum). Since then, the demand has repeatedly surfaced. In December 2014, Bungie’s PR chief Erik Osborne confirmed that they had heard the demand for “dog fights.” However, that would be a “very large system” that would take a lot of time (via YouTube). If they were to do it at Bungie, they would have to do it right. They would need to build a sandbox around it and ensure that dog fights had a reason for being. However, since then, Bungie has never sent a signal in this direction.
Bungie: Innovation-Blocked
A crazy wish actually: Such an idea seems to be considered “crazy” by Bungie. This is also quite understandable. Space battles in a first-person shooter? What does that have to do with the “core” gameplay experiences? That may be a beautiful dream. However, it is probably not feasible… or so one would think.
Warframe is getting them: However, it has been clear since last night: Warframe looks different. With the update “Railjack,” actual space battles are expected to come in 2018 – albeit only after the update with the open world.
New mode as a surprise
Surprise as a highlight: At TennoCon 2018, the fan fest of Warframe, no one expected a highlight at the end of the presentation. After all, Digital Extremes had just presented the new open world. But the indie studio went one better. During the demo of the open world, Warframe introduced the villain “Nef Anyo”. He bombarded the players from space. Just as the presentation seemed to be over, Warframe showed how the players would fight back: in their spaceship.
“Warframe is now officially the better Destiny,” the fans yelled
New game mode: “Codename Railjack” will be a separate, new game mode. The group members will occupy stations in a battle-cruiser. One will steer, and one will operate a turret, for example. A highlight that fans particularly loved: It will also be possible to leave the ship and fly around in one’s own Archwing. From there, one can directly destroy the enemy ships’ flaks. In addition, there are invasions of the own ship, and one can board the enemy’s capital ship.
11 minutes of presentation makes players: The gameplay presentation of the mode “Railjack” lasted 11 minutes, and the Warframe fans were ecstatic. One highlight followed another.
Hall amazed: Our Mein-MMO author Leya, who was at TennoCon 2018 in Canada, describes the audience’s excitement during the scene. Especially when it was revealed in the presentation that one can start directly from the planet without reaching loading screens, the hall in Canada exploded. The fans chanted: “Warframe is now officially better than Destiny.”
Warframe – ready for change
What does that mean? Warframe is ready for change compared to established AAA games. This involves taking risks. This was already seen in 2017 when Warframe, a “lobby shooter” with linear levels, suddenly dared an open world. That was brave and something one hardly expected from Warframe.
Even in 2018, it remains exciting what Warframe has to offer. Instead of just planning the second open world – and that would already be enough – Warframe is taking the next step. This makes it clear: Digital Extremes can continually surprise the players in Warframe.
Exactly what is missing in Destiny
What is missing in Destiny is exactly this surprising element: Destiny 2 was not an innovative evolution of Destiny with new ideas, but rather a “relaunch” with only a few fresh elements. The sad thing is: The few fresh ideas did not work, and Bungie has been working for a year to take them back.
Take a slice, please: Even though Warframe and Destiny are hard to compare: gameplay and production values differ, as a player one wishes for more willingness to innovate in Destiny. Warframe shows how one can achieve great successes even with small means. One gets enthusiastic about what Destiny could be with its great core gameplay and all the resources Bungie possesses.
Super presentation in 11 minutes about “Codename Railjack”
Refreshing: Bungie could also take a cue from Digital Extremes regarding the presentation style. All major revelations at an event for the fans – that is a refreshing change compared to the months of PR snippets that Bungie currently releases for Destiny 2 Forsaken.
Highlights back to back: Looking at how the “dog fights” in Warframe were presented, it becomes evident that the hall saw a surprise approximately every 90 seconds and erupted in cheers. This worked excellently in 2017 as well. This year, the presentation of Warframe was exemplary.
