I used to love hating this Flappy Bird. That stupid, pixelated, yellow bird from 2013 that stared into the void.
The game mechanics seemed so simple. You just had to tap the screen to make the bird jump so it wouldn’t hit the green bars that came in its way. The bird reacted strangely to tapping due to its heaviness, making every millisecond count whether it hit the bar or not. Most of the time, I hit the bar – Game Over.
Happy Zephyr is as delightfully frustrating as its predecessor
I was absolutely addicted to Flappy Bird. It was so wonderfully frustrating in its simplicity that it motivated me to try again and again. Eventually, I forgot about the bird. Until I discovered an Easter egg in Warframe called “Happy Zephyr”.
Even though I’ve already spent about 150 hours as a Space Ninja by passion in Warframe, I only recently learned about this cool mini-game.
Zephyr is a playable Warframe in the online shooter, who claims the skies and is fondly referred to by fans as the bird frame.
Instead of jumping with a yellow bird, you now jump past the pipes with a mini Zephyr. Happy Zephyr is just as difficult and frustrating as its predecessor Flappy Bird. It made me just as addicted and provides a perfect diversion for in-between.
But wait, there’s more! Interested in a shoot’em-up with Wyrmius?
After I learned about Flappy Zephyr Bird, I started searching for more Easter eggs in Warframe. That’s when I found “Wyrmius”, a shoot’em-up featuring the little drone Wyrm.
Wyrm is one of the companion sentinels from Warframe that assists you on missions. This guardian is quite aggressive and equipped with a laser rifle. Perfect for blasting some Corpus into the air in “Wyrmius”! The whole experience is accompanied by cool arcade music and, as they say in the community, “pew-pew laser sounds”.
Typical for Warframe and shoot’em-up, you will find some mods along your way that improve Wyrm and equip it with new attacks. These will invariably become more extreme and explosive, to counter the enemies’ projectiles. You have three lives, and if they run out, you restart the game from the beginning.
It’s almost as merciless as Happy Flappy Zephyr, and I shot my way through the enemies again and again, hunting for the next upgrade for the delightfully ridiculous large explosions. It’s amazing what the little Wyrm can bring to this mini-game.
The worst part: Wyrmius also hits my sweet spot! First Flappy Bird and now the shooting drone. It’s as if the mini-games of Warframe were tailor-made for me to keep me eternally bound to the game.
It’s precisely these quirky and loving little details that make games special for me. It all started for me in Warframe with a pretty space cat.
