Will Warcraft 3: Reforged be “reforged” once again? It looks like it – because a version “2.0” has been discovered.
Warcraft III: Reforged is likely to be considered the biggest blemish in the history of Blizzard Entertainment. The highly praised game Warcraft III was supposed to shine in a new light – but the launch was a disaster. The promised changes to the campaign were absent, many features no longer worked or were removed, and the “old version” could not be played anymore.
The launch was so devastating that Blizzard even allowed returns in many cases. Fans were disappointed – and it was clear that the legacy of a legendary game had been tarnished.
What has happened now? A few days ago, something strange happened with Warcraft III: Reforged. The tool “Blizztracker,” which reads when a new version of a game is fed into the Battle.net system, suddenly displayed an updated version of Warcraft III: Reforged: Patch 2.0.
Presumably, this is the mistake of a Blizzard employee. Because the version was labeled as “w3d,” with the “d” standing for “Developer” – meaning a version that was actually intended only for the developers.
The mistake was apparently noticed quickly, as the version number was changed shortly after – but by then, the news was already out in the world.
Why is this so special? Warcraft III has always had a version number starting with a 1 since the game’s inception. Neither the expansion “The Frozen Throne” nor the remake “Reforged” changed the version number before the point. So, the fact that a patch is in the works to elevate Warcraft III to version “2.0” seems to be a significant matter.

What could be included in Warcraft III 2.0? So far, one can only speculate. However, over a year ago, there was a survey regarding what the (remaining) player base of Warcraft 3 would like. Many of these features have already been implemented, but some larger ones are still missing:
- Revamping the interface
- Redesigning the graphics
- Changes to the campaigns
In addition, there are, of course, many – sometimes utopian – wishes in the community regarding what should come with a major “2.0” patch. There is a strong demand for a new playable race and a corresponding campaign – the Naga would be a clear favorite here, as they already exist in the game with almost all buildings.
What will actually happen with Warcraft III will probably only be revealed when the “Warcraft Direct” event takes place. Here, Blizzard wants to introduce many new contents for the franchise on the occasion of Warcraft’s 30th anniversary. It might also be time to give the most iconic strategy game of a whole generation a new coat of paint that would be worthy of the name “Reforged.”
