The Warcraft movie was received quite well internationally, but its weak success in the USA made it more of a flop. Director Duncan Jones recently spoke about this in an interview, explaining why it makes him proud but also angry.
Warcraft: The Beginning may never get a sequel, which is mainly due to the film’s poor performance in the USA. Nevertheless, director Duncan Jones stands by his project, which makes him both proud and angry. In an interview with Thrillist, the filmmaker shared what bothers him about the film and what he finds great.
Too Many Small Changes
Jones laments that the film underwent too many small changes and that he couldn’t enforce his vision more strongly. Since the development of the film stretched over more than three years, small changes had to be made repeatedly, resulting in the final outcome being increasingly distorted.
“When you make small changes, it doesn’t seem special at first. But if you keep doing that, making those small changes repeatedly, especially over a period of three and a half years, suddenly you spend a large part of the time trying to fix the mess created by this tinkering.”

Duncan Jones is not just angry; he truly loves the film and poured a lot of passion into it over the three years of development. However, he is not particularly proud of the epic battle scenes or the cool effects. Instead, he is happy that the love story between the orcs Durotan and Draka is just as he wanted it in the film.
“[It feels] like a real relationship between husband and wife, but these two characters are orcs! That is something I have been after from the very beginning, and I fought hard to keep it in the film. It always felt like a real victory.”
