Warcraft 4 is unlikely to appear anytime soon. But does it have a chance as a mobile game?
For many fans, BlizzCon 2016 once again did not bring the one big announcement they’ve been waiting for over a decade: Warcraft IV. For them, World of Warcraft is just a distortion of the lore, and everything that came after “Frozen Throne” was simply not “the Warcraft they loved.”
But does Blizzard even have plans to develop another Warcraft title in the near future?
In an interview with Game Informer, Mike Morhaime spoke about the topic:
“We love real-time strategy games, but currently our focus is on developing StarCraft 2 and Heroes of the Storm – because MOBAs are also RTS games. I’m glad that there’s so much interest and passion regarding Warcraft 4. I would love to see Warcraft 4 at some point in the future, but that is not our current focus.”
In another interview, Morhaime spoke about the potential of mobile games and the fact that no game studio has yet achieved a real breakthrough in this area.
“People still haven’t figured out what the ‘killer app’ on mobile devices is. I believe there are still many possibilities here. We have so many people with these powerful gaming devices in their pockets, which they carry around every day. I think there’s still a lot of uncharted territory.”
And that’s exactly what brings us to our consideration: Could Warcraft 4 work as a mobile game?
Cortyn thinks: Honestly: As long as World of Warcraft is still doing reasonably well (which it definitely is at the moment), there will probably be no Warcraft IV. Even though Blizzard said years ago that they might simply build on Warcraft III, that is just not realistic anymore today. The number of people who associate “Warcraft” mainly with “World of Warcraft” is growing every day, and they would massively alienate these players by simply ignoring all the story from WoW.
