With “The Hunt for Gollum”, there will be a new “Lord of the Rings” movie. Aragorn actor Viggo Mortensen reveals whether he would return.
The “Lord of the Rings” saga will soon be enriched by another film. The Hunt for Gollum
revolves around the story of Gollum. Peter Jackson is also back on board as producer.
Andy Serkis will once again embody Gollum and this time sit in the director’s chair. The screenplay is by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who together with Jackson wrote the Lord of the Rings
and Hobbit
films.
It is possible that Aragorn (played by Viggo Mortensen) could also return, as he recently revealed in an interview.

What does Mortensen say? Viggo Mortensen has indicated in an interview his willingness to once again step into the role of Aragorn, but only under certain conditions. He emphasizes that he would only accept the role if the story and his age allow it:
I don’t know the story exactly, I haven’t heard anything about it. Maybe I will find out sometime. I enjoy playing this character. I’ve learned a lot from it. I had a lot of fun. I would only do it if I were appropriate for it in terms of my age, etc. It would be silly to do it otherwise.

What’s the problem? Over 20 years have passed since the completion of the Lord of the Rings
trilogy. Viggo Mortensen was in his early 40s during the films – today he is 65 years old. This obviously poses a problem, even though he and presumably nearly all fans would wish for a return.
The Hunt for Gollum
is supposed to take place roughly parallel to the beginning of The Fellowship
– presumably between Bilbo’s birthday and Frodo’s departure for Rivendell.
Aragorn is a central figure in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings”. He is originally introduced as a mysterious ranger from the north, known by many names, including: Strider and Estel. Only a few knew his true lineage.
In truth, he is the rightful heir to the throne of Gondor and a descendant of Isildur. Throughout the story, Aragorn proves to be a brave and wise leader. Viggo Mortensen’s portrayal has undoubtedly made him a fan favorite.
When does the movie premiere? An exact release date for The Hunt for Gollum
has not yet been announced. The Gollum film is supposed to hit theaters in 2026 – probably again around Christmas. Whether Viggo Mortensen will play Aragorn again or if the legendary role will be taken over by a younger actor remains to be seen.
