Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, the latest game in the well-known franchise, will be released on November 30, 2022, on Steam. A new trailer provides a glimpse into the dark world of the game.
What kind of game is Warhammer 40,000: Darktide? The Warhammer franchise is a fantasy universe and competes with the well-known Warcraft series. The Warhammer tabletop was released in 1983, making it significantly older than its competition.
The game will be an action shooter with co-op mode. On behalf of the Inquisitor, you will play as imperial soldiers against Chaos and its followers with up to 3 other people: The mission is to regain control of the city.
Under the macro-city Tertium, you will encounter zombie-like creatures that you must eliminate. The followers of the Plague God “Nurgle” and the Tempter “Slaanesh” will make your job harder.
The whole thing takes place in a very dark, futuristic setting, which is shown in the trailer.
This isn’t a surprise. Already in an earlier trailer in the summer of 2022, it became clear: Warhammer 40,000: Darktide takes place in a dystopian future where hardly anyone would want to live.
Who is behind Warhammer 40,000: Darktide? The creators of the new game are the game studio Fatshark, which has already developed Warhammer Vermintide 1 and 2.
The predecessor game Vermintide 2 takes place in a fantasy universe and celebrated enormous success on Steam shortly before the upcoming release of Darktide, even becoming the top trend on the platform: Although it is already 4 years old, it had 51,000 players and 83% positive reviews.
Since Vermintide 2 is already a dark and brutal game, it seems that the developers are heading in a very similar direction with Darktide.
When will Warhammer 40,000: Darktide be released? After there was already a closed beta on Steam in October 2022, the game will be launching later this year. On November 30, 2022, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide will be available on Steam.
You can already pre-order the game. It costs €39.99. If you want the “Imperial Edition,” which includes a DLC in addition to the game, you currently pay €59.99 for the bundle (as of November 11, 2022, via Steam).
Is Darktide worth it? MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus is a huge Warhammer fan and has spent dozens of hours in Vermintide.
For the beta test of Darktide, he also gave the sequel a chance and says:
“Darktide is fun, but had some weaknesses in the beta compared to Vermintide. Although 40k impresses with futuristic firearms and technology, all of that somehow seems to be missing in the gameplay of Darktide. I really didn’t shoot much; most of the time I stood in front of the enemies with a club or something similar.
There’s also the fact that Darktide actually feels too dark for me. Odd for me to say this, but all the levels just seem kind of monotonous. Sure, we’re playing somewhere in the sewers of a monstrous city. No light gets in there. However, I’ve lost my sense of direction much more often than I’d care to admit.
The classes play differently and are very interesting with their abilities, but I miss the facets and banter of the notable characters from Vermintide. I can’t give a clear recommendation, but I can’t say that Darktide isn’t worth it either.
Fans of Warhammer 40k and dystopian science fiction in general will get their money’s worth; I will definitely spend a few dozen hours playing. But it’s just not Vermintide.”
MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus
Our MeinMMO editor adds that he could only play Darktide for a few hours, and much of the replay value in Vermintide appears late in the game. However, he simply misses the charm in Darktide.
Benedict has mainly fallen in love with the fantasy world of Warhammer, which can still outshine his beloved World of Warcraft:
In a perfect world, the greatest MMORPG today would be World of Warhammer
