A video went viral on Twitter featuring a squirrel chasing a passerby with a gun. And yes, it looks as ridiculous as it sounds. The best part is: this quirky scene is becoming a whole game in Unreal Engine 5 and it will be released on Steam.
Just take a quick photo of a cute squirrel posing in front of you – that’s surely a nice idea. But when the little critter suddenly picks up a weapon from under a chair and aims it at you, how much fun is the situation then?
That’s exactly what a short teaser video does for Squirrel with a Gun. Yes, that’s right: the game is simply called “Squirrel with a Gun” and is just as crazy as it sounds.
For just 23 seconds, a cute and fairly realistic squirrel is shown spreading fear and dread with a gun that is larger than the animal itself, only to then flee with the loot: the passerby’s smartphone.
In no time, the short clip received over 13.6 million views and 76,000 likes on Twitter. The response is largely positive with comments like: “I absolutely love everything about this game. Can’t wait to get started.”
While there is criticism of violence in video games in general, the mood for Squirrel with a Gun is mostly positive.
Squirrel with a Gun – You decide whether to be cute or terrifying
What kind of game is this? Squirrel with a Gun is a sandbox game that gives you all kinds of freedoms. It is developed by indie developer Dan DeEntremont. It is probably most comparable to wacky ideas like Goat Simulator – only with squirrels.
As of now, there are no real goals. You can help or rob passersby to gain rewards. A major focus is, of course, on the combat system. There are numerous firearms that you can use.
However, you are subject to a more or less realistic physics. That means: if you fire a .50 caliber hand cannon as a little squirrel, you will experience corresponding recoil. And the famous Uzi will even send you flying. Literally.
In one scene of the game, the little critter is also seen trying to get to a nut protected by an electric field. So there are apparently some collectibles or certain clues, even though it very much reminds of Scrat from Ice Age:
When and where can I play Squirrel with a Gun? You can already add the game to your wishlist on Steam. Whether Squirrel with a Gun will also be released on platforms other than PC is currently unknown. So far, only a single-player mode has been announced.
When exactly Squirrel with a Gun will be released is a “Good question!”, as the developer writes on Steam.
Squirrel with a Gun is, by the way, not the only game that can impress with just a little gameplay but a grand idea:
