With F1 22, the latest installment of the “Formula 1” game series is released today, June 28, accompanied by an action-packed launch trailer. MeinMMO author Dariusz Müller has few points of reference to the popular motorsport series but still wanted to dive into the virtual racetrack after the turbulent scenes.
What makes the trailer so special? Even the first seconds of the trailer make me excited for a major sports event. We hear cheering voices from the cockpit of an obviously successful driver and soon see initial video sequences from various races.
A series of further short clips from different races follows, showcasing focused drivers and their boundary-pushing racing machines. The editing of the trailer ensures that the scenes evoke energy and euphoria. The individual scenes are very short and change rapidly. It somehow fits the action of a motorsport event.
Meanwhile, the narrator tells us about the world’s most exclusive asphalt and the speed of the race cars. Then it suddenly gets very quiet, before music kicks in, and we see drivers raising the trophy they have earned.
From the trailer to the racetrack
What distinguishes the trailer from TV broadcasts of Formula 1? If the trailer does one thing really well, it’s generating action and excitement. It feels to me as if an epic film about motorsport is about to start, or a montage of the past championship is kicking off the new major event of Formula 1 – I am a fan of sports events and films.
Films and sports events always manage to make me interested in a topic again. During the World Cup, I play FIFA, and after movies like The Godfather or The Irishman, I play Mafia 1-3. This is exactly the reaction that the F1 22 trailer evokes in me, even though I am not a fan of Formula 1.
In fact, I could never understand why numerous viewers follow the races with such suspense. However, I also don’t have the eye for brilliant maneuvers and cannot feel the excitement from the perspective of the TV camera. People who see only 22 individuals chasing a ball might feel similarly.
In the F1 22 trailer, however, I see the action-packed scenes, the cheering drivers, and I immediately want to hit the racetrack and realize that the trailer has achieved exactly what it wanted: It made me excited for the latest game in the franchise.
F1 22 with Supercars and Virtual Reality
What kind of game is this? F1 22 is the latest installment in the F1 game series. It is a racing game developed by Codemasters and published by Electronic Arts.
In the F1 games, you take control of a Formula 1 race car. You participate in races and can even manage your own team. The games feature a single-player campaign, an online PvP mode, and a co-op career.
F1 22 will also be playable in VR mode and even offer supercars from individual manufacturers, which you can use for hot laps.
Even though the F1 games are not considered a pure simulation among racing game fans, but rather a “simcade” – a mix of simulation and arcade racer – professional drivers from real motorsport temporarily switched to the video game due to the corona pandemic.
