Already after the release in 2017, PUBG enjoyed a large player base. It was a massive hit and is still one of the most played shooters on Steam. In fact, it was PUBG that established the “Battle Royale” genre. It was the first shooter to have 100 players compete against each other. Titles like Fortnite: Battle Royale or CoD: Warzone followed PUBG. They had an advantage over PUBG – they were free to play. Nearly 5 years after its release, on January 12, 2022, PUBG also became a free-to-play title. Will it gain even more players because of that?
