In the latest video, the colleagues from GameStar Talk discuss with our editor-in-chief about service games and whether it would be better for them to draw a line at the right moment.
What is GameStar Talk? On the YouTube channel GameStar Talk since 2023 you can watch the GameStar Podcast in video form. This is a joint offering from GameStar, GamePro, and MeinMMO, aiming not only to entertain you with videos and discussions but also to always provide something new: perspectives, insights, and knowledge about games, their developers, and their players.
Should service games end at the right time?
What is being discussed: In their latest video (via YouTube), our colleagues from GameStar Talk discuss with our MeinMMO editor-in-chief Leya Jankowski about service games and whether it shouldn’t be their greatest art to know when to stop at the right moment.
Most people probably think of service games as “monster games” that accompany you for many years or even decades. They want to keep you entertained for as long as possible to maximize profits and extract as much money from their players as possible.
In fact, most players would likely wish that the service game that particularly excites them continues for as long as possible. For example, Destiny 2, Path of Exile, Counter-Strike, or the long-lasting and DLC-rich strategy game Europa Universalis 4.
No other game has mastered this years-long support as well as Fortnite. The problem is that not many other games handle this art well. GameStar Talk specifically mentions the update delays of The Division 2.
So the question arises whether it would not be better for a service game to withdraw at the right time? To stop when the game shows hardly avoidable signs of fatigue and simply creates no room for new and creative ideas.
