Aliens: Fireteam Elite is a shooter based on the Alien franchise. The gameplay trailer showcases its new DLC.
What kind of game is this? Aliens: Fireteam Elite is a cooperative shooter from Cold Iron Studios set in the universe of the well-known Alien franchise from films and other media. There, you fight through hordes of Xenomorphs in a campaign using various weapons and gadgets.
The shooter was released in August 2021 and is playable on PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.
What kind of DLC is this? The new paid DLC for Aliens: Fireteam Elite is called “Pathogen” and continues the main game’s campaign with three new missions. Pathogen has been available since August 30 and costs 14.99 Euros.
The new Pathogen DLC includes new enemies, new maps, as well as 8 new weapons, 13 new weapon attachments, and some cosmetic customization options.
Xenomorphs and flamethrowers in the trailer
What does the trailer show? The trailer showcases gameplay scenes from the new Pathogen DLC. In addition to the new weapons and weapon attachments (starting at minute 00:13), we also see some gameplay scenes in third-person perspective (minute 00:20).
Notably, the use of a healing gadget (minute 00:21), a drone (minute 00:22), and a stationary turret (minute 00:24) stands out. The focus is especially on the turret, which immediately opens fire on the Xenomorphs.
Subsequently, there are several scenes in which the aliens are fought with weapons and gadgets (minute 00:30), before the use of a flamethrower illuminates the scene (minute 00:41).
The game doesn’t deserve the kind of hate
What do the players say? The reviews on Steam are quite clear: 81% of nearly 12,800 ratings are positive.
In the comments under the Pathogen trailer on YouTube, the mood is rather mixed, and there are plenty of positive as well as negative statements about the game:
- NightFoxZero: “This game does not deserve the kind of hate it gets in the comments. It’s a fun game.”
- Martin Macias: “The game was released with literally 4 levels that can be completed in less than 4 hours with a team, and they want us to pay for [the purchase of] missions that we already expected in the game.”
- Zzir Famo24: “I wish they would put as much effort into Predator Hunting Grounds.”
- Ironshell: “The iconic sound of the M41A Pulse Rifle gives me chills.”
- Broken Tube: “15 dollars for things that should have been in the base game already. No, thanks.” (via YouTube)
Comparison to The Division
Division with aliens? Some players even compare the alien shooter to Ubisoft’s hit title The Division. For instance, a YouTuber jokingly writes under the Pathogen trailer:
- OneBagTravel “The Division 3 looks insane!” (via YouTube)
There are also comparisons to the looter-shooter in the Steam reviews.
- masto1975: “It’s not a bad game in itself, a The Division in the Alien universe. It’s really fun to play, until the point where you activate a challenge card and get kicked out of the match.” (via Steam)
Looking at the Pathogen trailer again, we see that the comparisons are not entirely unfounded, even though the setting is completely different.
Aside from the third-person perspective, the use of gadgets such as the drone, turret, or flamethrower especially reminds us of Ubisoft’s shooter.
