Rimworld is one of the best building games on Steam and is now making its way to consoles. On July 29, 2022, the indie hit will release a PS4 version, which can also be played on PS5 thanks to backward compatibility and promises many hours of gaming fun.
What kind of game is this? Rimworld is a sci-fi colony simulator and a mix of building and survival game. You start with a few colonists, continuously expand your colony, research new technologies, and must defend against attacks.
The graphics are rather simple – top-down view in comic style. But the gameplay depth is overwhelming and allows you to discover something new even after many hours.
Small example: Although your colonists look like they only consist of a head, torso, and arms, an angry squirrel can bite off the “toe” of a colonist’s left foot.
This depth runs through all mechanics, and with the configurable difficulty level, you decide whether you want to experience Rimworld more as a survival adventure or as a building game.

Personal conclusion – MeinMMO author Maik Schneider: I have been playing Rimworld for years and keep coming back to the building game. It is an absolute showcase example of an indie game that does not shine in graphics but offers an incredible number of possibilities.
The replay value is almost unlimited – especially if you approach it as more than just a survival game. In the first rounds, the game will destroy you. But step by step, you learn how to protect your colonists from the threats that offer bigger challenges with each passing hour of gameplay.
By now, I and my girlfriend have over 2,000 hours of gameplay, for which we only paid about €30 because we share the game through Family Share. However, there is only mod support for the PC.
Mod support has not been announced for consoles. However, you can share the game on PlayStation with a second person and the DLC “Royalty” is also included in the “Digital Deluxe” edition.
