Some players currently complain in V Rising that they are losing their progress. The culprit is servers that disappear or are reset – even though they appear to be “official.” A helpful vampire explains how to prevent this.
What is the problem? Many players set up their own servers in V Rising, for instance, to avoid problems with the decay of castles. The servers can be freely named and some operators exploit this.
They describe their server as “official,” making it seem as if the game world is provided directly by the developers. However, it is not; it is in private hands.
This means: On the private server, an admin has the power to do whatever he wants. He can reset the server, take it offline, or change the rules. All players on it are affected.
How can I protect myself? The reddit user ImSavageAF explains that you can recognize whether a server is actually official or just claims to be by a small symbol. If you see a small, angular spiral before the name (the symbol of Stunlock Studios), then the server is directly from the developers.

In all other cases, it is a fan server that only calls itself official. Here, you risk losing your progress if the admin decides so.
There is a larger discussion in the thread. Many thank others for the hint, and some report that they have indeed lost many hours of work for this reason. Others say private servers are actually even better.
Unofficial servers also have advantages
What differences are there? Basically, the game runs the same on private and official servers. There may only be some differences in speed and rules under certain circumstances.
Private servers can use their own settings such as increased resources, more or less damage, different day and night cycles, and PvP rules. Additionally, you never know how the admin will decide the next day.
Official servers are always the same. They operate on the standard settings of the corresponding modes, and everyone has the same conditions. Here, you normally do not lose server-side progress, but players do sometimes report connectivity issues. Moreover, official servers are often very crowded, so there may not always be space to log in or to build in the world.
And what is better now? Private servers can be a gamble. As the reddit user dd179 writes: “Unofficial servers with a good community are significantly better than official ones. Official ones have no moderation and no punishment for those who grief you.”
Conversely, there is the experience of Excite_Throwaway: “Somehow I played for 2 hours with a friend when we were suddenly teleported to someone’s castle for a bloodbath. Everyone was dumbfounded.” Another time, the admin helped unsolicited with a boss. “I just want to exist normally, man.”
You must therefore decide for yourself what you prefer. If you just want to explore the game anyway and not play with strangers, you can simply start a private game. There you are alone or only with friends.

By the way, you can now also simply play offline or create LAN servers. This means you don’t even need an internet connection anymore. If you want to be completely sure that you do not lose progress, you can fall back on this option.
If you are interested in V Rising, you should not be put off by such stories. If you pay attention to where you play, you should not have any problems – especially if you start with friends. And even starting later is not too much of a hurdle:
Can I still start with the new Steam hit V Rising or will I get wrecked by everyone?
