Valheim is a dangerous game where countless enemies seek your life. It is almost inevitable that you will bite the dust a few times on your journey. But what actually happens when you die in Valheim? MeinMMO clarifies.
This is what happens when you die: Basically, Valheim punishes a death very severely. The game wants to emphasize a certain aspect of toughness, after all, you are fighting against some of the most dangerous foes of the Allfather Odin. Death has the following consequences:
- you lose 5% of all your skills
- all equipment and items are removed from your inventory and appear as a tombstone at the place of death
- all buffs and debuffs disappear
- you respawn at your last save point
- a skull marker on the map shows the location of your last death
How do I get my stuff back? The lost items can be found in a tombstone at your location, from which you can pick everything up again – provided that no one else has done so before you. Other players can also simply take your loot.
Once you have looted your tombstone, you will receive the buff “Corpse Run,” which significantly reduces physical damage taken and lessens endurance consumption when running and jumping. This makes it easier to escape.
Dying in Valheim costs you skill points and experience
What does “loss of skill points” mean? In Valheim, you gain experience in using various weapons and skills, such as bows, axes, and sprinting. You can upgrade these skills up to a maximum of level 100.
If you die, however, you lose 5% of your current value in that particular skill. For example: If you have the bow skill at value 100, you lose 5 points. If it is only at value 50, you would lose 3 points (it is rounded).
What does “no skill loss” mean? If you die multiple times in a row, it has less severe consequences. After your first death, you have the buff “no skill loss” for about 10 minutes.
If you die again during this time, the gods show mercy, and you do not lose skill points again as described above. Everything remains intact.

Avoiding deaths and proper preparation
How can I avoid dying? The most important thing is extreme caution. When you are out in Valheim, you should never underestimate the enemies. Even the smallest enemies can take you down if you’re not careful.
Especially when you venture into heavier areas like the swamp, the mountains, or the plains, you can quickly be done for without preparation. MeinMMO author Florian Franck reveals some mistakes you should avoid:
You should pay attention not only during your expeditions but also when building. If you attempt to construct larger buildings, you could quickly fall and meet an untimely end. You can protect yourself from fall damage with the right food. Ensure that you have over 100 health points and you should survive any fall. Our list shows you the best food in Valheim.
What else should I watch out for? If you want to venture deeper into the vast world of Valheim but don’t want to take risks, you can prepare with some simple tips. This way, death will be less grave.
First of all, you should definitely establish a base camp with at least one bed. You will use this as a respawn point. If no such point is set, you will start at the Circle of Power, where you start the game.
It’s also useful to have a stockpile of weapons, armor, and materials. If you die deep in a dangerous area, having spare equipment ready will help you. It’s best to keep old weapons and armor for emergency use or set aside materials to craft armor.
Especially important are resources for a ship. If you die at sea, your tombstone will float on the water, but you still need to reach it somehow. Additionally, you might die on a foreign shore. Ideally, you should always be able to build at least one Karve – we strongly advise against a raft.
