Players of the survival hit Valheim are trying all sorts of curious things in the game. Among them is a flight with a ship over the sea, which went quite bizarre.
What was this experiment? The Valheim player HotGuuuuu built a gigantic ramp on the side of a mountain. At the top, he sat in a ship. This was supposed to launch him spectacularly into the water. However, the journey ended a little differently.
As the player released the restraints, the ship rushed down the ramp into the depths and ultimately took off at the end. The ship hit the water in such a way that it was catapulted like a trampoline, sending it back into the air.
The ship hit the water again and bounced up very high once more. Eventually, the journey ended in a tree.
What happened to the player? Nothing. He remained completely unharmed. The ship also seems to have taken no damage, neither from hitting the water nor from landing in the tree. This is partly because the player keeps repairing the boat during the flight.
In the video, you can see exactly how the flight took place:
How could this happen? The physics system of the successful survival game Valheim created a curious situation here. It is unclear why the ship bounces off the water. Was it the angle at which it hit? Or did it possibly hit an object beneath the water surface?
It seems a bit like throwing a stone over a lake, which then gets repelled by the smooth surface of the water and flits across the water.
What do players think of the video? The Valheim community is discussing on reddit what might have happened here.
- RBC_Ante suspects that it has something to do with the shipping system (via reddit): ‘I suspect it is because the water physics are programmed so that the boat bounces back to its original position, as if it is bobbing up and down on the water. That’s why it also jumps to this incredible height when it falls so deep again.’
- LuxuryBeast finds the video very funny (via reddit): ‘And 1,000 years later, archaeologists find the longship and wonder how it got there.’
- WTFSpeeder16 is also thrilled (via reddit): “It makes me laugh so much that the game is programmed to have the boat bounce on the water.”
It’s amazing what players in Valheim do that has nothing to do with the game itself. That is surely one of the reasons why the survival game has become such a hit on Steam.
