Valheim has already talked about what new content will be coming with the upcoming updates. One of these contents is a new area: the Mistlands biome. And this area could become really disgusting for many players.
What kind of area is this? The Mistlands are a dark forest with giant, ancient trees. You can find the biome – depending on seed – commonly at coastlines and near swamps or dark forests.
In the Mistlands, it is always night, so you will always have the “Cold” debuff, which reduces your stamina and health regeneration. If you want, you can already take a look at the biome. On the map, it looks like a dark forest with an even darker texture.
Why will it be disgusting? It is still not entirely clear what content will appear in the Mistlands. We already know for sure that a new boss awaits you there. However, there are already some clues indicating what to expect there:
- it is always dark, almost like in a cave
- there are webs and nets everywhere, but they are currently empty
- “Ancient Roots” stretch through the area and will apparently be the special resource
- giant trees with thick trunks rise high, but they do not have leaves
- skulls that are too large even for a troll
All of this makes players already suspect that the Mistlands will be a forest full of giant spiders – and possibly the boss will even be such a spider. The partially tubular nets could harbor eight-legged creatures that are larger than the Vikings themselves. In our gallery, we have increased the brightness a bit because otherwise, hardly anything can be seen:

On reddit, players are already sure that spiders will appear here. The user datastar763 expresses his concerns in a thread titled: “Arachnophobia is fun! (not)” (via reddit).
New content for Valheim
When will the Mistlands be released? So far, there is no specific date for the Mistlands. The developers have only listed it as “Update 4” in their roadmap for 2021 (via Steam).
Before that, likely, three other updates will be released for which there is also no specific date yet. Since Valheim was originally developed by only five people and the success came somewhat unexpectedly, it is hard to say when the updates will come.
What else is coming? The next major update is “Hearth and Home”, which is already known a bit more about (via PCGamer). The update focuses mainly on content for building and crafting and brings for example:
- new recipes for cooking, which means there could be new best foods
- possibly new stations for cooking
- new building components for bases to create even better structures
After Hearth and Home, Cult of the Wolf, Ships and the Sea and finally the Mistlands will follow. Additionally, the developers are working on new areas and improved systems. However, bugs must be fixed first.
