Before the fight, you should definitely clear the area. Additional enemies make the fight nearly impossible because you cannot dodge anymore. You can also place some campfires as “traps” to set the boss on fire as he moves.

Third boss: Summon and defeat Bone Worm in the swamp

Where can I find the boss? The Bone Worm is located in the swamp biome. You can find the Vegvisir for the boss in the sunken crypts or in ruins in the swamp. For these, you need the swamp key from the second boss.

What rewards do I get?

  • Forked bone/divining rod for hidden treasures and silver
  • The power of Bone Worm, which reduces the physical damage you take

How to summon Bone Worm: To summon Bone Worm, you need three weathered bones. You can find them in the mud piles in the sunken crypts. In our guide, you will learn how to find the swamp and open the sunken crypts.

Abilities and strategy

The fight against Bone Worm is one of the hardest, if not the hardest in the game. He can summon a strong poison cloud, calls skeletons and blobs, and heals during combat.

Additionally, he is nearly immune to any type of stabbing and blade damage. You absolutely need a blunt weapon like an iron mace. Even an upgraded wooden club does more damage than a hunter’s bow with iron arrows. However, if you have already been to the mountains, frost arrows can give you a huge advantage.

Definitely take poison resistance mead with you; without it, you will not survive the fight. Ideally, take several units with you and store some in case you die. Wear the best armor you can craft.

In combat, you should focus on melee, despite the poison damage. Due to Bone Worm’s healing, you need to deal continuous damage to defeat him. The powerful hammer Stagbreaker, whose recipe you get from Eikthyr, is particularly effective; it deals damage to both the boss and his minions when he summons them. You can also push back the minions this way.

Fourth boss: Summon and defeat Moder in the mountains

Where can I find the boss? Moder is a wyvern that you can find on one of the peaks in the mountain biome. Your Vegvisir is located near the stone ruins and buildings in the mountains, where draugr and skeletons often roam.

What rewards do I get?

  • Dragon tears, which allow you to forge black metal
  • The power of Moder, which ensures that the wind is always at your back while traveling by ship, regardless of its actual direction

How to summon Moder: To summon the wyvern, you need three dragon eggs found in nests in the mountains. Look for a purple shimmer. The eggs weigh 200 – so you can only carry one at a time – unless you have the Megingjord belt from the merchant Haldor. Carry the eggs individually to their shrine or ask friends for help. Once the eggs are set up, you must interact with the stone tablet to offer the sacrifice.

Abilities and strategy

In the fight against Moder, a lot of skill is required. She has several attacks that you need to dodge and two phases: air and ground. In the air, she flies and throws ice spikes at you. One of the attacks causes ice crystals to appear on the ground, and the other deals significantly more damage.

On the ground, she has a melee attack in an arc in front of her, as well as an ice breath that can freeze you. When she briefly raises her head, you should roll to the side quickly. Each individual attack does not deal too much damage but will slow you down. If she hits you, it can quickly lead to multiple hits in succession.

Frost resistance helps you significantly in the fight against Moder. Take corresponding mead with you and craft the wolf hide armor from the wolves in the mountains and silver. You will need it to survive in the biome anyway, and they are also useful against Moder and her attacks.

For attacks, you should focus on ranged combat against the wyvern. Obsidian arrows are expensive but powerful. Alternatively, you can deal significant damage with poison or cheaper fire arrows and deal damage over time when you need to dodge or hide. Definitely take a hunting bow with you.

Dodge Moder’s attacks with a roll (right-click + direction key + spacebar). You can see her attacks from the air coming, and on the ground, you should be at a distance anyway. She announces her attacks there by briefly raising her head or wing. Use the long pauses in between to fill her with arrows.

Fifth boss: Summon and defeat Yagluth in the plains

Where can I find the boss? Yagluth is a giant skeleton with a crown and the currently last boss of Valheim. You find him in the meadows. To learn his location, you need to find his Vegvisir at the large rocks in the plains, where usually huge brutes of the fulings roam.

What rewards do I get?

  • New material – coming soon
  • The power of Yagluth, which grants you resistance to elemental damage (fire, frost, poison).

How to summon Yagluth: You need five fuling totems that you can find in the plains. The shamans of these goblin creatures can drop them. Place the totems at Yagluth’s altar and then interact with the stone tablet to start the fight.

Abilities and strategy

Yagluth has three attacks that are all very easy to recognize. When he raises his head and it glows red, he will breathe fire at a very long distance. Seek shelter behind the stones or dodge quickly to avoid burning.

If he raises his left hand and it glows orange, he will summon a meteor shower. In this case, also seek shelter behind the many rocks in the arena. If he raises his right hand and it glows blue, he will slam it into the ground, causing an explosion. Keep a safe distance.

The fight is relatively easy compared to Moder or Bone Worm. Yagluth moves extremely slowly, and you can dodge most attacks. However, keep in mind that he is the current final boss and do not underestimate him. If you get hit, it can still quickly kill you – especially if you are burning. Be sure to bring strong healing mead.

Stay at a distance and fight him with your best bow and ice arrows. Strong armor is advantageous, but not necessary if you can dodge well. Fighting in pairs makes the battle significantly easier when Yagluth focuses on one player, while the other can attack him from the back with melee weapons. Clubs and hammers are particularly good.

The best weapons against bosses

Many bosses have specific weaknesses. For example, you can defeat Bone Worm more effectively with blunt weapons or frost arrows, whereas Moder is best defeated with poison and fire.

As a rule of thumb, always use the best weapon you can currently craft and upgrade it as much as possible – at least if you feel stuck against a boss.

For most bosses, round shields and one-handed weapons are particularly good. With those, you remain mobile, can block well, and still deal damage. Bows and arrows are also worth it.

If you play in groups, you can use an Abyssal harpoon to bind and pull the enemy. While one or more players distract the boss, others can defeat it.

If you want to deal a lot of damage overall, check out our list of the best weapons in Valheim. There, you will also learn how to craft these swords, axes, and spears.

The bosses are not only powerful enemies but also a goal you can work towards. They are an important part of the game and mark chapters that you experience on your journey through Valheim. Killing bosses is incredibly satisfying, and that is why Valheim is so popular.

Alternatively, you can stay at a distance and harass him with a bow. However, this takes significantly longer and costs you arrows. We recommend melee combat.

Second boss: Summon and defeat The Ancient in the dark forest

Where can I find the boss? The Ancient is a giant, living tree in the Dark Forest. You can find its position by using a Vegvisir near the ruins in the burial chambers of the Dark Forest. Look out for stone buildings, where usually skeletons or dark dwarves await.

What rewards do I get?

  • The swamp key, which grants you access to iron
  • The power of The Ancient, which allows you to deal more damage while chopping wood for five minutes – meaning you can fell trees faster

How to summon The Ancient: Once you have determined the position, you need three Ancient seeds. You get these by destroying dark dwarf nests in the Dark Forest. The nests have a purple aura that can be seen from a distance in the forest.

Alternatively, you can kill dark dwarf brutes or shamans. They also have a chance to drop the seeds. Place the seeds in the fire bowl at the altar of The Ancient by putting them into your action keys.

Abilities and strategy

The Ancient is significantly harder than Eikthyr. His melee attack is a wide arc that can effortlessly destroy cover like rocks and trees. His special abilities include summoning vines from the ground and a ranged attack that lets several vines strike at your position. You will already see the summoned vines appearing around you from the ground. When The Ancient raises its arms, it begins to bring them to life. You should get away quickly at that point.

Blocking does not work much against The Ancient, so you should definitely keep your distance. Equip yourself with troll hide or bronze armor and make yourself a fine wood bow. Mead is also helpful as a healing potion. In our guide, you will learn how to make mead in Valheim.

The Ancient is vulnerable to fire damage, so fire arrows are very effective. Pack at least 200 or more. Stay behind the stone pillars of his altar during the fight and keep your distance. The boss cannot destroy the pillars with his ranged attack, and you are safe.

Fire two or three arrows at him after he attacks, and then hide again. Once the vines appear around you, switch positions and repeat it until he is dead.

Before the fight, you should definitely clear the area. Additional enemies make the fight nearly impossible because you cannot dodge anymore. You can also place some campfires as “traps” to set the boss on fire as he moves.

The bosses are not only powerful enemies but also a goal you can work towards. They are an important part of the game and mark chapters that you experience on your journey through Valheim. Killing bosses is incredibly satisfying, and that is why Valheim is so popular.

The boss fights make the new survival game Valheim special. They reward you with special items and advance you on your journeys. MeinMMO explains how to find and defeat all 5 of the current bosses. We have guides for Eikthyr, The Ancient, Bone Worm, Moder, and Yagluth.

What are bosses in Valheim? The toughest opponents in Valheim are the bosses. Each of the currently available biomes (except the ocean) has a boss that acts as a “culmination” of that biome.

Bosses reward you with powerful buffs and items that advance you. When you defeat a boss, you gain access to new materials that allow you to craft stronger gear, weapons, and building parts.

The exciting battles are therefore a chapter finale on your journey each time. However, you first need to find the bosses and prepare for them. MeinMMO reveals how to do that.

Update from March 12: We have added tips for the best weapons in the fight against the bosses. You will find the section at the very end of the article.

Note: The map of Valheim is procedurally and randomly generated. Therefore, the exact location of a boss will differ for each player. Each boss can have multiple spawn points, and they can be summoned and killed multiple times. We will give you tips on how to track them down.

First boss: Summon and defeat Eikthyr in the meadows

Where can I find the boss? Eikthyr is located in the meadows, and you can find his position right at the beginning of the game. Use the Vegvisir right next to the trophy circle at the start, and his position will be marked on the map.

Valheim trophies and Vegvisir
The small stone on the far left is the Vegvisir, a Nordic compass. Look for one for each boss to discover its position.

What rewards do I get?

  • Antlers to craft your first pickaxe
  • The recipe for the Stagbreaker
  • The power of Eikthyr, which allows you to consume less stamina when running and jumping for five minutes

How to summon Eikthyr: To summon Eikthyr, you need deer trophies. You get them from the deer in the meadows with a low chance. You must place two of them on his altar.

To do this, drag the trophies into your quick slots at the top (keys 1-8) and then press the corresponding key while aiming at the altar. Eikthyr will then be summoned and face you in battle.

Abilities and strategy

Eikthyr has two special attacks in addition to his normal melee attack. When he slightly lowers his head and raises his front hooves, he prepares for a frontal lightning strike with high range. When he stands on his hind hooves, he prepares an area attack around him that hits anyone in the summoned dome.

The fight against Eikthyr is relatively easy. Each of his attacks can be blocked with a regular shield. The best and fastest strategy is to attack him with a flint axe or a flint spear and a wooden shield. Block his attacks and strike him during his relatively long attack pauses. You should be able to get in 2-3 attacks.

Alternatively, you can stay at a distance and harass him with a bow. However, this takes significantly longer and costs you arrows. We recommend melee combat.
