A user purchases an RTX 3090, which currently costs around 2,000 euros. However, the new luxury graphics card quickly overheats. The reason lies, quite literally, in the graphics card.
This is what happened: A user bought a GeForce RTX 3090. This is a graphics card for which you currently have to pay at least 2000 euros or more (via geizhals.de). However, the graphics card struggled with major heat issues.
The graphics card generated enormous heat and consistently reached temperatures of over 90 degrees Celsius. This is not normal for a normally well-cooled high-end graphics card. The memory temperatures also quickly exceeded 100 degrees Celsius.
This is how he solved the problem: The user suspected that something was wrong with the graphics card. He opened the graphics card and found a strange plastic part.
He posted his find on reddit:
Now I know why my memory temperatures reach 110°C so quickly. Now they stay at a maximum of 86c after 1.5 [hours] of stress testing. Also, the core dropped by 10 degrees Celsius (from 75 to +/-65 degrees Celsius after the stress test)
If you have heat problems with your gaming PC, you can find important tips and tricks on MeinMMO about what you can do:
Users initially think that a ‘condom’ is stuck in the graphics card
These are the reactions: Immediately, there were some comments that wildly commented on the picture. A few even speculated that it could be a condom that had appeared in the graphics card (via reddit.com)
However, a few users immediately recognized that it was not a condom, but rather another protective product (via reddit.com):
They look like small condoms, but they are individual finger protectors.
They are often used on assembly lines and in manufacturing, where products should not be handled directly.
The post definitely caused a lot of amusement and surprised faces. However, there was also criticism of the find.
This was criticized: A few users were surprised at how one could find remnants of a finger protector in such an expensive graphics card. After all, you paid more than 2000 euros for the graphics card, and in the worst case, could end up with long-term damage to the graphics card.
Manufacturing errors in graphics cards remain exceptions
Does this happen more often? It is clear, however, that such a find is an exception. The reddit post represents an exceptional case, and in the editorial office of MeinMMO, we have not come across such a find so far.
However, errors can occur during production or assembly. For example, Igorslab posted a picture where the thermal pads were incorrectly mounted (via igorslab.de). However, such errors remain exceptions.
In this case, everything went well because the user had come up with the right idea and disassembled the graphics card. Foreign objects in a graphics card could lead to greater problems than just heat issues in the long term.
It is also not the first time that there have been nasty surprises with a GeForce RTX 3090. During the New World beta, some users criticized that the game was supposed to damage their hardware, especially several RTX 3090 graphics cards:
