A player brings his gaming PC for repair to the service. He receives a message that the CPU cooler is too dusty to be removed. Therefore, the PC cannot be further inspected. When a paid replacement is offered, he feels cheated.
Problems with one’s own gaming PC can become an annoying matter. Depending on knowledge about PCs, players can help themselves and solve minor issues alone, especially if an error was caused by avoidable beginner mistakes.
In more difficult cases, the last resort is to go to a PC workshop. There, trained specialists try to get the gaming PC running again. In the case of a player on Reddit, this only worked to some extent because he was to pay for the nonsensical replacement of his CPU cooler.
Player has to pay for ridiculous PC repair
What kind of repair was that? On Reddit, the user “_windbourne_” reports on the repair of his gaming PC. When the computer no longer displayed an image, the player tried to repair it himself, as the problem can sometimes be just a trivial issue inside the PC.
I tried many things – checked every connection between the components, reseated the RAM modules and tested them individually, attempted to boot without a graphics card, cleared the CMOS, and replaced the CMOS battery – I even tested the power supply for signs of life with a paperclip.
_windbourne_ reported on Reddit about his PC repair
He says his repair attempts were unsuccessful and he had little knowledge about computers. Therefore, the problem was not as easy to solve as it could be with a misconnected graphics card. The player decided to take the PC to a local PC workshop.
A service technician contacted him with an update regarding the inspection of his computer. The message stated that no issues were found with the RAM, power supply, graphics card, and the drive including the installed operating system during the previous tests.
What was the problem? Next, the technician wanted to check the motherboard and processor. However, this would not be possible as the CPU cooler was too dusty to be removed, and for this reason, he could not access the underlying components.
To solve this “problem,” the player was offered to replace his CPU cooler. For this work, the workshop reportedly charged a service fee of around 75 euros and the additional costs for a new cooler.
What happened next? The player believed that they wanted to cheat him and sell a ridiculous repair that had nothing to do with the actual problem. The statement from the service technician was misleading and made no sense at all to him.
Reddit user CodAfraid5367 saw it the same way and said:
- “Too dusty to remove. So let me remove it to replace it. What?”
inertSpark on the other hand, wanted to know how the technician intends to remove the cooler that supposedly can’t be removed:
- “Ask him what magical powers he plans to use to replace the cooler when it is apparently too dusty to remove it from the bracket.”
Accordingly, _windbourne_ replied to the technician and asked him, “Why do you want to charge me for replacing my CPU cooler when you apparently can’t even remove it?”
In the subsequent response from the workshop through a service manager, it was stated that due to the dust, they had some concerns that other PC components could become dirty.
However, they understood that the initial message had caused confusion and wanted to accommodate the player. For the further tests, a new cooler would now be used, which would remain in the gaming PC as a free upgrade after the inspection was completed.
This case unfortunately shows that not every PC repair goes smoothly. It remains to be hoped that the player will eventually receive their gaming PC back fully functional and that the costs will remain within reasonable limits.
