What are the former developers of Neversoft (Tony Hawk Pro Skater) up to, who founded a new studio with Free Range Games in 2009? Well, they are developing a “love letter to skateboarding culture” of a different kind, for Steam and the Epic Games Store.
What kind of MMO is this? Free Range Games’ current project is called Wrekless and is set to enter Early Access in the third quarter of 2024 on Steam and the Epic Games Store. According to the official description of the game, you can expect a “love letter to skateboarding culture” of a different sort.
Wrekless is supposed to be a small-scale MMO where you can build skateparks and mini-games in real-time with up to 50 other skaters, where fancy tricks and daring combos can be chained together.
The announcement trailer for Wrekless:
Real-time means that ramps and jumps can be constructed right in front of or underneath skating players. You can also drop speed boosts in front of them or wipe the rail from under their board in the middle of a grind.
In addition to community parks, you will also have official levels from the developers available. Your most epic moments can be recorded. The variety of assets from the building kit will allow you to create parks with a wide range of themes. The Early Access phase is expected to last about a year. How much the EA access will cost is currently unknown.
Skateboarding professionals at work
Who is behind Wrekless? The indie developers of Free Range Games may sound familiar to you as they released the survival crafting game The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria last year.
Before that, they supported other studios on notable projects like The Callisto Protocol or Oddworld: Soulstorm, and they released smaller games such as Rube Goldberg Workshop or Spelldrifter.
Regarding the skateboarding theme, it is particularly exciting to consider the projects the developers worked on before their time at Free Range Games. They were part of Neversoft, where they helped create perhaps the best digital skateboarding series of all time with Tony Hawk’s Skateboarding.
