Epic Games and Sony have released a video showcasing the capabilities of the new Unreal Engine 5 on the PS5. What did you think of the video?
What happened? Yesterday, on May 13, a new YouTube video from Epic made the rounds in the gaming world. Two employees from Epic introduced the new Unreal Engine 5 in it. The video was meant to give a first impression of what games on the next generation of consoles could look like.
The tech demo was played on the PlayStation 5 and is said to show actual gameplay in real time according to the developers. It is indeed a proper playable demo that runs on the PS5.

The technology of UE5 is based on two features:
- Nanite: It is the ability to use huge amounts of polygons for rendering the environment. This makes the representation of assets in games much more detailed.
- Lumen: This technology is meant to improve lighting in games. For example, it should enable better and more believable representations of dynamic scenes.
Things like pop-ins, which are suddenly appearing objects in the game, should be avoided in the future and provide a smoother gaming experience.
The Unreal Engine 5 will not only run on the PS5. Developers will also be able to create their games on PC and the Xbox Series X with the new technology. The release of the engine has initially been announced for “early 2021.”
