With Blightbound, you can play a new action RPG on Steam that is reminiscent of Diablo. You fight your way through a dark dungeon full of monsters with two other players.
What exactly is Blightbound? In the hack ‘n slash, you want to leave your mountain refuge and have to fight through several dark lands and deep dungeons where many monsters dwell.
You take on the role of one of 20 pre-made heroes from the classes, Warrior, Mage, and Rogue. Each hero has unique abilities. You team up with up to two other players to face the challenges together.
During your escape, you find loot to upgrade your heroes. Additionally, gigantic boss monsters will stand in your way, and now and then you have to solve a puzzle.
You also need to free craftsmen who create new equipment for you, earn you money, and even train you.
A 2D Action RPG with an Attention Problem
What makes the game special? You do not see the adventure from the isometric perspective typical for hack ‘n slashes, as you are used to from Diablo 3. Instead, it is a side-scrolling view. The models, such as characters and monsters, are also hand-drawn 2D figures that act in 3D levels. This gives the action RPG a very special atmosphere.
How is the game received? The overall ratings on Steam are at 73%, with current ones at 62%.
The atmosphere and overall gameplay are praised. Fighting cooperatively through the dungeons is said to be a lot of fun.
However, the performance is somewhat criticized, and there are too few players. Since Blightbound does not have an offline mode, you are entirely dependent on other players to defeat the boss monsters. But as Steamcharts shows, there is a lack of players. The title needs more attention, according to the community’s opinion, so that more people want to try it out.
The loot system is also criticized. The longer you stay in the same lobby, the better the chances of finding better loot. If you switch to find more players, the chances drop again.
As it is an early access game, there are still bugs present. But you just have to reckon with that.
What does the game cost and how will development proceed? You can get the action RPG for 19.99 Euros (currently reduced to 15.99 Euros) on Steam. The developers are already planning further content such as new heroes, more loot, and additional story content.
Just recently, an update called “Helping Hands” was released, which adds AI helpers. This should somewhat improve the problem of missing players – although it is, of course, more fun to play with human teammates.
