Crafting is nearly integral to every MMORPG, but often it devolves into tedious grinding and RNG chaos. However, a few systems stand out that are still fun. We want to know in a survey which crafting system you like best.
Hardly any aspect of online role-playing games is hated more than crafting, as it often doesn’t yield much and is simply boring for many players. At the same time, there are players who would rather gather resources and craft them into items in MMORPGs.
And then there are games where crafting is actually fun and provides substantial rewards. In our survey, we are choosing the MMO with the best crafting.
Crafting in MMOs – Hero and Part-Time Craftsman
The classic crafting in theme park MMOs like World of Warcraft lets you choose professions where you can then create more or less useful things. Usually, there are typical armor and weapon makers, as well as support professions like alchemists who create useful potions. Especially such support jobs are often the most useful professions.
Normally, your hero has to stand at the anvil or alchemy table and craft the items themselves. In some games, like Star Wars: The Old Republic, your companions do the dirty work. After all, it’s a bit silly if a great Sith Lord or a Jedi Master is piecing together some armors.
Also interesting: In The Elder Scrolls Online, you first have to painstakingly acquire numerous abilities and styles to craft particularly cool equipment in remote areas. And Final Fantasy XIV is, due to its flexible jobs, according to colleague Schuhmann, the best crafting system in the world!
Crafting in MMOs – Player Crafting as an Economic Foundation
Unlike theme parks, crafting in many sandbox MMOs is an essential part of the game economy. For example, in ArcheAge or Black Desert Online, where many items are produced by players and thus come into circulation.
This player-driven economy works particularly well in the super-sandbox EVE Online. In it, everything you buy in the game has been built by other players. Especially the big ships and space stations often require huge amounts of resources, which large guilds toil over for weeks.
