The grandfather of MMORPGs turns 20 years old, and this must be celebrated with a very special event: Ultima Online becomes Free2Play.
The new Free2Play mode “Endless Journey” comes with some limitations and thus reminds more of the Free2Play mode of EVE Online.
In principle, it is possible to download the MMORPG Ultima Online for free and also to play it for free. However, you will then have to live with sometimes severe restrictions that can certainly spoil the gaming experience.
Many limitations with the Free2Play version
One of the biggest limitations is the severely limited bank inventory, which also exists separately from the “real” bank. In addition, you cannot buy a house and place it anywhere. These are two significant restrictions, as the banking system and housing are two cornerstones of the MMO. Anyone who wants to use this must still take out a subscription. Essentially, one could say that the Free2Play mode is nothing more than a trial version without a time limit.

Nevertheless, it should be an opportunity for players to experience one of the oldest MMORPGs and discover what many still find fascinating about this game. Perhaps newcomers will take a liking to it and then take out a subscription. If you take out a subscription, buy a house, and then want to switch to the Free2Play version, you can only log back into the game once your house has decayed in the game world.
Furthermore, the developers at Broadsword are working on new content that takes place on the seas, and players will be able to create their own quests. The Free2Play version “Endless Journey” of Ultima Online is expected to launch in spring. Until then, you can celebrate the 20th anniversary of the MMORPG, which was officially released on September 24, 2017.
