According to various sources, Ubisoft is reportedly working on a new PvP game currently titled “Project Q”. There, you will fight against each other in two different modes in smaller teams. We at MeinMMO reveal what is known about it.
What kind of game is this? Project Q is said to be an “innovative and modern PvP arena game,” as shooter expert Tom Henderson reports (via exputer). Information on this has come to light today, as first testers have been able to get hands-on with the game.
The focus of Project Q is expected to be on two game modes:
- In “Showdown,” four teams of two players each fight for survival, similar to a battle royale.
- In “Battle Zone,” however, two teams of four players each compete to be the first to reach 100 points. To collect these points, you must capture and defend specific areas of the map.
In these arenas, you will compete with your own hero, whose abilities and weapons you can determine yourself.
For weapons, you can choose from a variety of items, including hammers or paint cannons, but also a deck of playing cards or fireworks, which you can use to deal damage to enemies. In addition to the weapon, you can choose from a pool of variable abilities, including wings that allow you to jump and fly in the air.
Is there already gameplay? At least none publicly. However, Exputer reports that they have already received insights and that the art style resembles Knockout City by EA and Overwatch by Blizzard.
Project Q is likely an unannounced project that Ubisoft is working on
Has anything been heard about Project Q before? Ubisoft Bordeaux, which was founded in 2017, is reportedly working on an unannounced PvP game that is to be Free2Play according to its own website.
So far, there is no information available about the game. It is now generally assumed that Project Q could be that game.
When will Project Q be released? This is not yet known. However, the current test suggests that the development may take some time. According to Henderson, the game is still rough and unfinished in its current state.
Players love PvP arena games when they are well made
How has it been for games in this genre recently? In 2011, Riot Games hit big with its MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) League of Legends. Since then, there have been repeated attempts to clone the game or explore new avenues in PvP arena games.
Successful alternatives included games like Smite, which brought the LoL principle into a third-person perspective, or Rocket League, which focused on an interesting mix of cars and soccer.
In 2016, there was also much commotion around hero shooters when Paladins and Overwatch were released. These two titles have managed to hold on until today, but they are no longer as popular as they were at release.
However, there have also been some flops recently:
- In 2019, there was the attempt to release Broomstick League, Quidditch from Harry Potter, as a PvP game on Steam. However, the game was already discontinued in 2020.
- In 2020, Rocket Arena, a fast-paced 3v3 action shooter, was released. It is still running today, but without major headlines or much attention.
- Also in 2020, Amazon aimed to hit big with the arena shooter Crucible. However, the game was discontinued a few months later. The leadership at Amazon Games was particularly criticized.
