In Pokémon GO trainers have the opportunity to collect various medals. While some of them are relatively easy to achieve, two badges in particular frustrate many players. We at MeinMMO show you which ones they are and what change the community desires.
What is it about? Every trainer can collect different medals in Pokémon GO. These cover a wide range of areas, such as a complete Pokédex for a region, a certain number of trades, or catching specific monsters.
Each badge is divided into Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. To achieve these, a certain number of a specified goal must be met, such as catching 1,000 Pikachu for the Platinum medal “Pikachu Fan”.
However, some trainers are expressing particular difficulties with the two medals “Teenager” and “Angler” and are frustrated. We will tell you why.
Why are “Teenager” and “Angler” so difficult to achieve?
In the reddit community, there is currently a heated discussion about the two medals “Teenager” and “Angler”. The reason is the specific challenges that trainers must overcome to achieve these two badges in Gold or even Platinum.
Even though both medals involve catch tasks, they are quite unique. To achieve the “Teenager” badge, a certain number of tiny Rattata must be caught. The “Angler” medal, on the other hand, requires large Magikarp.
Besides the fact that it is generally quite difficult to catch the required tiny or large specimens, the game also requires a significant number to achieve each medal. For Gold, 300 must be collected, and for Platinum, even 1,000. Many trainers find this too challenging.

Even Cerborealis finds the challenge too difficult and writes on reddit that he believes the two badges are outdated. They were introduced at a time when Rattata and Magikarp could still be found more frequently in the game, making the task challenging but still solvable.
Since both monsters are now significantly rarer in the game during spotlight hours or specific events, catching them is additionally difficult, making the achievement of Gold and Platinum medals, according to Cerborealis, out of reach for some trainers (via reddit.com).
Many trainers agree in the comments. Among the statements found there:
- nils_w: “Angler was always difficult, Magikarp was very biome-dependent. I have been playing since 2016 and I am halfway to Platinum for Rattata, but still 12 away from Gold for Magikarp.”
- srozo: “I have also been playing since 2016, and I have 119 large Magikarp and 169 Rattata… caught 800 and 1500 respectively.”
- lewisisb: “Even when they were available, XL/XS are just too rare.”
- Bruceeb0y: “Level 50 with a total of 330,000 catches; caught 4,974 Magikarp, medal at 839/1,000; caught 6,594 Rattata, medal at 754/1,000.”
The only way to meet the required counts for Rattata and Magikarp and get closer to the medal goal, aside from catching, is trading the respective monsters. Even if they were not caught themselves, they are still counted for the medal by Niantic.
Possible solutions from the community
The reddit community agrees that Pokémon GO needs to make some changes regarding the two medals. One possibility, according to Cerborealis, is that the two badges should not be limited to Rattata and Magikarp but expanded to other monsters like Oddish, Lotad, or Barboach (via reddit.com).
The reddit user lewisisb, on the other hand, suggests that the medals should be adjusted so that all caught Rattata and Magikarp count towards the achievement, similar to what is done for Pikachu. This way, size would no longer have to be a consideration (via reddit.com).
It is currently unknown whether Pokémon GO will take up these suggestions and appropriately adjust the two medals in the future. If Niantic provides new information about it, you will find it here on MeinMMO.
