Content creators who earn their money with Twitch or YouTube often need sponsors to finance their content. Hardly any sponsor is as infamous as RAID: Shadow Legends. Now the role-playing game is available on Steam.
What kind of game is this? Anyone who has been online without an ad blocker in recent years has hardly missed RAID: Shadow Legends. Over time, so many content creators have advertised the game that it has become a meme in its own right (via Know Your Meme).
The advertisements were either run normally, or YouTubers interrupted their programming to sing the praises of the game – which they, of course, had already played extensively in their free time, to be honest.
Even the great Ninja was “really excited” when he was immortalized in RAID.
Notorious RPG surprisingly arrives on Steam
Okay, but what is RAID actually? RAID: Shadow Legends is a turn-based role-playing game that was released in 2018 for Android and iOS and brought to PC in 2020 with its own launcher. As of January 9, 2024, it is also playable on Steam.
With over 800 playable characters that players can use in the 8 modes of the game, RAID falls under the so-called “Gacha Games”. As is not uncommon for a mobile title, there is also auto-play and aggressive monetization.
How do the first reviews look? While RAID enjoys a rating of 4.5 stars in the Play Store with over a million downloads, it is faring much worse on Steam: Of just over 200 reviews so far, only 47% are positive (as of January 10, 2024, 3:00 PM).
On Reddit, existing players also report problems linking their previous account with the Steam version, while others have already found a workaround. It remains to be seen whether RAID can eventually reconnect with its mobile successes over time.
However, for those who finally want to form their own opinion and have been hesitant about the PC launcher, the barrier is now at least lower than ever, as RAID can be downloaded for free on Steam.
