Félix “xQc” Lengyel (26) opened loot boxes in the Steam hit Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and had incredible luck. He received several skins and a weapon worth several thousand euros. However, he did not immediately realize how valuable the items were.
What is the deal with loot boxes in CS:GO? Over the years, a trade in cosmetic weapon skins has developed in CS:GO, which players can find in loot boxes and can sell for absurdly high amounts on the marketplace.
The probability of getting good loot boxes in CS:GO is low. Often, you open one box after another and still do not get any special items.
Ultimately, buying and opening loot boxes is a kind of gambling: you can be very lucky and pull a special skin, but you can also just get “duds”.
Who is xQc? The Canadian streamer made a name for himself in 2016 as a professional player in Overwatch but now also streams CS:GO and other games. He is now one of the most successful Twitch streamers in the world, with 10.9 million followers.
As a large leak revealed, xQc is also the highest-earning Twitch streamer through the subscription model.
CS:GO-Stream: xQc’s lucky streak begins
This was the lucky streak: xQc opens old CS:GO weapon cases in a stream. These cases cost over €55 each, making them the most expensive loot boxes in CS:GO. The top skins from this box are:
- AWP Lightning Strike
- AK-47 Case Hardened
The probability of getting either of the two weapon skins is exceedingly low. In fact, xQc receives two of the rare AWP skins and one AK-47 skin worth over €950. An impressive record, considering that xQc had only opened eleven loot boxes at that point.
However, the streamer was not aware at first that he had just received absolute top skins. Accordingly, xQc reacted emotionlessly to the AWP “Lightning Strike”.
Here you see the moment when xQc gets the top skin:
Streamer, who already earns the most money on Twitch, is also the luckiest
What else did xQc receive? Since his return to CS:GO, the streamer has been followed by loot luck. He received two very valuable knives in the last months.
Many knives in CS:GO can be sold for around €100. Some even for several thousand. Depending on the skin and color, the price can rise further.
When xQc opened a “Chroma 2” weapon case, he received the knife “Karambit Marble Fade” with the well-known “Fire and Ice” design. It was “Factory New” and “Stat Trak”. A combination that is incredibly rare and worth more than €1,900.
xQc recognized this lucky grab immediately. See his reaction again in the video:
When xQc opens another loot box, he receives a Karambit knife in the “Crimson Web” design. The streamer seems initially disappointed and even comments on his loot as “garbage”.
However, the streamer was once again incredibly lucky. The depicted web of the skin was located centrally on the blade, which increased the price of the weapon by an additional 50%. The knife is therefore worth between €1,100 and €1,600.
After all these lucky grabs, there was still a surprise at the end. xQc received a Stat Trak AK-47 “Fire Serpent”. Because it was equipped with Stat Trak, its value was around €1,900.
Here the streamer was immediately happy:
xQc keeps finding new ways to engage with his gambling addiction
What’s behind it: Although xQc had incredible luck with his loot boxes, one fact should not be forgotten: to get valuable items, you have to spend a lot of money beforehand. Especially the most expensive CS:GO boxes are not cheap at over €55.
xQc has shown a dangerous penchant for gambling in online casinos in the past, which even led to addiction: The streamer recognized his problem and wanted to stop gambling on Twitch.
He has also been heavily criticized by other streamers for his gambling streams: he was said to be setting a bad example for his young audience. xQc has repeatedly warned against gambling but then lost large sums.
When you look at his €55 spins on loot boxes, the question arises whether looting in CS:GO is not just another form of gambling, and whether xQc is falling back into his addiction. The positive impression that the large audience could get from gaming is problematic in any case.
That expenses usually exceed income and the probability of large wins is exceedingly low can quickly be forgotten during such a lucky streak
If you want to see how differently it can turn out, look at this case: A CS:GO player spent €200,000 on loot boxes and was bitterly disappointed.
