The Twitch streamer Asmongold created a new character in WoW Classic: Wrath of the Lich King. But the naming process started to get stuck.
Who is it about? Asmongold has been streaming on Twitch since 2014 and, with over 3 million followers, is arguably the biggest streamer for World of Warcraft and MMORPGs in general. Additionally, he showcases other games as well.
Even Asmongold’s room, where he streams, has become a star over time – in a way. Recently, however, the focus was back on WoW: In Wrath of the Lich King, Asmongold created a new character. But the last step of the extensive customization caused the stream to briefly freeze.
Because Asmongold’s preferred names were all taken.
“Someone is really putting in the effort”
In the stream, it can be seen how Asmongold wants to use this name at the start of Wrath of the Lich King for his character – only to be shown that “Asmongold” is already taken. “Wow, what a surprise,” he comments there already cynically.
Neither “Asmon” nor “Zackrawrr” go through, nor does “Asmongler”. “Someone is really putting in the effort,” says Asmongold.
In the end, the character gets the name “Asmonfresh” – but the streamer is obviously not completely satisfied with it, but he says he doesn’t want to sit around for three hours thinking about it.
This is what Asmongold says about it: From Asmongold’s perspective, Blizzard should ensure that not everyone can use the name. “Seriously, I wish they would let me reserve a name,” says the streamer: “Because people imitate me and deceive others by pretending to be me.”
From his perspective, Blizzard should put a stop to this – in doubt, even in such a way that no one can be named Asmongold: “I wish Blizzard would just make sure that this name can’t be taken. It’s just bullsh*t,” says the streamer: “I would even prefer not to get it than for someone else to use it and deceive people.”
This is the problem with names: In online games and especially MMORPGs, naming characters is an important aspect, as especially in games with large player numbers, the preferred name can quickly be taken. Then you end up being “Asmonfresh” instead of “Asmongold” – or in doubt “XAsmonfresh2345”.
However, many players have been using the same name in various games for years – they are reluctant to change. With streamers, of course, there is also the component that players quickly consider securing the name.
Reserving a name is generally not possible in MMOs. One exception was, for example, New World 2021 – but it also had its problems.
