Since September 2016, the speedrunner and Twitch streamer Alex “MrLlamaSc” Sementelli has been on a mission: He plays Diablo 2 to find every one of the 386 unique items. He had been searching for the last item, a particularly rare staff, for two years. He shared his adventures on YouTube and Twitch. Now the search for the Holy Grail comes to an end.
What is the Holy Grail in Diablo 2? The “Holy Grail” refers to the quest to find every single unique item in the base game Diablo 2 and the expansion “Lord of Destruction.”
Diablo 2 has 386 unique items. All are recorded in an Excel sheet (via. docs.google)
The rarest items have a probability of about 0.0033 % – so 1 in 30348, even with high Magic Find and drops from Baal in Hell, as a Diablo scholar explains on reddit (via reddit). The hardest item to find is the armor Tyrael’s Might with a chance of 1 in 148,919.
The 5 rarest items in Diablo 2 are:
- Darfkforce Spawn
- Wang Song’s Lesson
- Astreon’s Iron Ward
- Death’s Webb
- Tyrael’s Might
For 2 years, Twitch streamer searched for only one item
This is what the player did: The streamer and Diablo 2 speedrunner “MrLLamaSC” set out in September 2016 to find all 386 unique items in Diablo 2.
It was going quite well, but: For 2 years, he was missing only “Wang Song’s Lesson,” an elite unique staff with item level 86, making it one of the rarest items in the game.
The staff grants +5 to all skills, mana regeneration, and some bonus stats. But that was not so important: The main thing was that MrLlamaSC finally finds the item.
This was the big moment: He has now actually found the last item. You can see the moment here when he receives the item and practically falls into ecstasy, stands up, screams, knocks over the chair, and tears his T-shirt off while grinning in delight.
By the way, it was much faster in the remaster, Diablo 2: Resurrected. There, a player got his Holy Grail after just 2 months.
How was his journey up to that point? The streamer uploaded several hours of videos on YouTube in a series called “Holy Grail Sorc”. In the end, he reached video 71. He also streamed his adventures in Diablo 2 on Twitch. In the last year, he spent over 1,400 hours on Twitch with Diablo 2 and Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction (almost 4 hours per day).
He specifically created a Sorceress for the task and went all in on “Magic Find,” but even with this build, it took an eternity to actually work through the list and find the Holy Grail.
The item system in Diablo 2, which had occupied MrLlama so much, was invented about 25 years ago:
