Michael “Shroud” Grzesiek loves the survival genre. Now he believes that one of the pioneers of the genre and creator of DayZ is creating perhaps the best survival game ever with “Icarus.”
What kind of game is it? Icarus is the latest game from DayZ creator Dean “Rocket” Hall. The New Zealander stays true to his developer roots and aims to create a novel survival experience with Icarus. For him, novel means instantiated co-op survival, where you get better with each attempt. It sounds a bit like the gameplay principle of Escape From Tarkov.
However, the premise is somewhat different: You find yourself on a hostile alien planet. Here, you must first satisfy your basic needs like hunger, thirst, and oxygen. Then you build a base and explore new technologies.
What makes Icarus particularly special is the variety of skill and tech trees. You can combine your abilities in countless ways and experiment a lot.
The main goal is not to colonize the planet. Quite the opposite: The goal is to escape from this deadly rock. Twitch streamer Shroud believes Icarus has the potential to be the best survival game of the coming years. But what exactly does he say about Icarus?
This is what Shroud thinks of Icarus: “I don’t think it, I know it!”
Shroud is a huge fan of all games that revolve around survival and hardcore simulations. In recent years, he has shared this passion with his viewers by playing Rust, DayZ, Hunt: Showdown, or Escape From Tarkov.
Now he has tested the new survival game Icarus, a new hope for the genre: Already at the successful second beta weekend, he comes to a clear conclusion:
Is the game good or is it bad, chat? The game is far from bad, very far! But it is a beta, so expect a beta!
However, Shroud does not only consider Icarus “not bad,” he believes that it could become one of the best survival games ever made. Sorry, he knows it, he says:
I believe that (Icarus) will be one of the best survival games ever made, once it is released. To be specific, I not only believe that, I know it. This has nothing to do with belief.
Fans in the chat asked Shroud why he praises Icarus so highly. He responds with the counter-question: How can you not see it? Shroud believes that anyone who plays Icarus for 5 minutes can understand his point of view.
Where can you test Icarus? So you don’t have to rely on Shroud’s admittedly quite vague explanation, you can test Icarus yourself. However, a paid pre-order via the Steam Store is required.
Until November 6, the beta phase of Icarus is running, but there’s a catch. The beta is only scheduled for selected weekends. So you can’t play continuously. You don’t have to worry about money. If you don’t like Icarus, you can return it regardless of playtime until the end of the beta.
Last weekend, the second beta weekend of Icarus began. You can find all information about it here: New survival game attracts thousands of players with beta on Steam, round 2 starts soon
