The famous Twitch streamer Chance “sodapoppin” Morris was banned from the platform for doing something seemingly racist during a game – he painted his character black. Now sodapoppin’s ban has been lifted, and he shared his thoughts on the ban, revealing that even his family called his brother.
What is the situation?
- The streamer was banned for painting his initially white game character black. Additionally, he applied thick red lipstick to the character.
- sodapoppin stated that he didn’t think much of it and was just trying to paint a potato. In hindsight, he realized that his painting looked very racist.
- The ban from Twitch was initially indefinite, but the streamer has now been unbanned after 2 weeks. However, this was not his first ban; he was previously suspended for a day for getting lost in a sex dungeon.

What does the streamer say about the ban? At first, sodapoppin didn’t even realize that he was banned and asked on Twitter: “Wait, when was I banned?” He then found out what the reason for his ban was.
When he started his stream on April 28, he immediately shared that he could contact Twitch to shorten the ban, but he didn’t do so because sodapoppin was initially angry at the platform. Once his frustration subsided, he viewed the ban as a little vacation and therefore did not challenge it.
After that, he watched the clip that caused his ban: “I watch the clip and I say: I deserved the ban. I’ll just leave it at that – I deserved the ban.”

However, there was a big but, which greatly irritated the streamer: “It’s very frustrating that family members call my brother and ask whether I am racist. That annoys me.”
Sodapoppin explained his thought process on reddit: He wanted to paint a potato and had Mr. Potato Head in mind. When he realized that he was engaging in blackface with his painting, he wanted to add the red, grinning mouth to mitigate the damage, but he did not realize that this only made it worse.
According to his own statements, he really just made a dumb mistake and did not intend to be racist. He also said that he did not want to portray himself as innocent with that statement, and that he definitely deserved the ban.
