As “Pokimane”, the streamer Imane Anys (26) is one of the most successful women on Twitch and has a huge community. She now reports on the insidious trick that an employee of the streaming industry allegedly used to approach her female viewers.
In a stream on March 1, Pokimane reported on a nasty trick that men use to target and manipulate women in their community. An employee of a large company in the streaming industry had allegedly faked a relationship with her to get close to her female viewers.
Man fakes relationship to land with viewers
Who is the responsible party? The streamer did not name anyone. However, it was allegedly a person who was well-connected in the streaming industry. She and other content creators had worked with the man for years.
What kind of trick was this? As Pokimane reports, the man allegedly used his contacts in the streaming industry to appear trustworthy when he wrote to women. He apparently always used the same pattern:
First of all, the man claimed to be struggling with his mental health and thus garnered sympathy from the women. Then he built up a relationship of trust over months, claiming he knew Pokimane and her friends personally and would spend time with them.
Eventually, he allegedly sent supposed chat transcripts between him and the streamer and even fake explicit photos of her. He apparently did this in the hope of receiving such images from his victims.
The fraudster allegedly went so far as to threaten to harm himself to ensure the women remained silent.
“It scares me what he might do next”
How did it all come to light? Pokimane reports that some young women from her community reached out a few months ago to speak with her manager. They presented numerous screenshots of conversation transcripts with the alleged confidant of the streamer.
To protect her own mental health, she did not look at the conversation transcripts and also does not know any further details, the 26-year-old said.
What does Pokimane say about it? The streamer emphasizes that she never met the man in person, but worked with him several times over the last two years. However, the relationship was said to be purely professional. She strongly condemns the man’s actions:
This is someone I’ve never met… This is really the most disgusting and abhorrent behavior I’ve ever heard of.
What consequences are there? According to Pokimane, the fraudster has now been fired after an investigation into his behavior was conducted. Nevertheless, she apparently still does not feel safe:
Even now, the thought of what he might do next scares me. I don’t know what would have happened if the girls hadn’t talked to each other and found out that he was lying.
It is not known whether the fraudster succeeded with his strategy and whether he also tried it in the communities of other female streamers.
