The European Twitch streamer Simon “Thebausffs” Hofverberg is known for his aggressive playstyle. Although he reached the rank of Challenger, the highest rank in the League of Legends ladder, he was banned by Riot. The reason: intentional feeding. However, the ban has since been lifted.
What happened? Thebausffs is known for playing champions unconventionally and very aggressively. This leads him to often find himself in “hit or miss” situations: either he wins his lane and the fights overwhelmingly, or he loses them.
When he loses, it often happens with many deaths.
In LoL, frequent dying is referred to as “feeding,” as you are “feeding” the enemy with gold and thus items. This makes them stronger and can lead to them suddenly rolling over the entire team by themselves.
For intentional feeding, there are even penalties up to account bans. And that’s exactly what happened to Thebausffs.
What kind of ban was it? For intentional feeding, his account was banned until January 23. Subsequently, there was protest on social media.
Among others, LEC caster Christy “Ender” Frierson spoke out. He wrote via Twitter: “To Riot Support – you messed it up.”
In the meantime, Riot itself has commented on the case and lifted the ban. Mark Yetter, Design Director for LoL, wrote:
If you didn’t know – our automated atk and int detection systems do 90% of the work, but in some cases, they get false positive results. Our player support team reviews and fixes the cases where the algorithm makes a wrong decision.
Aggressive playstyle is hit or miss – and it is being criticized
The streamer is not without controversy: During the bans, not only supporters spoke out demanding the ban be lifted. There were also players who saw the punishment as justified.
One of them was the former Schalke ADC FORG1VEN. He noted on Twitter that Thebausffs has reportedly lost many games and fed opponents with 0-15 for 10 years.
He found the ban justified.
What exactly does Thebausffs play? The specialty of the stream is the champion Sion with a Full-AD build, focusing on attack damage.
Sion is actually a kind of tank, but some of his abilities scale well with offense. Additionally, he continues to live for a short time after death due to his passive and does more damage, has higher attack speed and lifesteal during that time.
This allows him to take out several enemies even after death or at least deal significant damage to them.
Does it work well? That depends. With Sion, the streamer has an average win rate of 51%. In March 2020, he climbed the ranks to Challenger and was among the top 0.001% of all players for many months.
However, he recently fell into the Grandmaster tier because he lost more often with Sion. He usually achieved between 3 and 7 kills per game, but mostly more than 8 deaths. His last two matches before the ban ended with 4/15/0 and 4/10/3. In team fights, he had little impact, as shown by the few kill supports.
- The stats from Mobalytics show that Thebausffs played Sion in 1,613 matches. His average stats are 5.4/8.5/5.0 – which is rather weak.
- In comparison: The LoL pro Gabriël “Bwipo” Rau from Fnatic averages stats of 5.9/5.0/6.5 in 680 games on the top lane.
While Thebausffs obviously did not intentionally “feed,” his playstyle is not necessarily optimized. This also led to the accidental ban.
Sion is generally one of the less popular champions in LoL. However, we will tell you which ones are the most popular:
