The Twitch streamer Michael “Shroud” Grzeciek commented on upcoming games during a livestream. In his opinion, “games used to have more passion” and the community mostly agrees.
This is happening: In a Twitch stream, Michael “Shroud” Grzeciek was asked by a viewer if he was looking forward to upcoming games. His response was disillusioning: “No, not really. Let me think.”
He then began to talk about older titles: “I want older titles to be properly updated. I want a decent PS5 update for The Last of Us 2, so it runs as intended.”
He also wishes for modifiable games and various mod projects that he can play through. For example, he is drawn to S.T.A.L.K.E.R., which was released in 2007 and has had an online spin-off since 2019.
“Older games have much more passion”
Shroud says: However, Shroud went further in his stream and explained that older games have much more passion than newer ones. In his opinion, this is mainly due to the structure of large companies.
According to him, designers, programmers, and executives used to sit next to each other, and all decisions were made by the whole team. Nowadays, programmers and designers are often restricted by upper management and their creative freedom is limited.
The community says: Shroud’s community generally agrees with the streamer in the Twitch comments. Twitch user virusemourabumhole666 states: “New games don’t have the same atmosphere as old games in terms of playability, etc. Everything is just about money now.”
Other viewers of his stream, however, have a different opinion. Twitch user Mamba82 says: “I’m pretty sure it’s just nostalgia.” But Shroud directly denies that.
Furthermore, the expectations for today’s games have significantly increased. It’s no longer so easy to convey passion in games when players expect more and more. Indie games, however, still radiate a passion reminiscent of the past. In the Twitch comments, the name Valheim keeps popping up, which is currently skyrocketing on Steam.
So, one cannot simply say that games nowadays lack passion. For instance, Shroud desires a good PS5 version of The Last of Us 2, a title from 2020 that cannot be categorized as old. Our author Cortyn also finds the title great.
