A streamer of the MMORPG OldSchool Runescape lost a large amount of gold live on Twitch when he was killed by a player killer. He escalated live in front of his family. The community is discussing the clip: Why did someone have so much money with them? Could the scene be a setup to cover up a large gold sale?
This is seen in the clip: The Twitch streamer VoldemartLive has an average of 18 viewers and exclusively plays the MMORPG Oldschool Runescape.
In the Twitch clip, he grins broadly at the camera, while his wife is sitting on the sofa in the background holding the child on her lap. Everything looks harmonious: Dad is streaming, and the family is watching. A Twitch subscription even comes in, which visibly delights the streamer.
In the game, the streamer is teleporting to a new zone and is shocked: “Oh God, my hit points”. Immediately, another player comes at him, who has been waiting at the teleport point and now is attacking him with spells and abilities.
The woman in the background flinches and covers her mouth, while the child looks on in horror as to why dad is screaming wildly.
The player killer easily eliminates his victim in the MMORPG Runescape as the streamer runs off-screen screaming, then comes back and bangs a controller on the chair. The mother gets the child out of the line of fire.
Robbed on the way to the casino
What happened in the clip? The streamer actually intended to play in a kind of casino for an extremely high stake. Therefore, he had loaded his character with 30 billion gold. This corresponds to about €12,700 if one were to acquire the Runescape gold through real money traders.
The streamer teleported to the zone where the casino is located. But apparently, he was not aware that PvP was active – instead, he thought he was safe.
However, player killers are hanging around at this teleport spot, waiting for victims to appear.
The spot is known to be “dangerous”. On YouTube, player killers upload videos showing how they earn billions of Runescape gold at this spot and make loot worth several tens of thousands of US dollars (via youtube).
Anyone who dies here loses everything they carry, and the player killer can loot the victim – the streamer therefore lost a huge amount of money due to a silly mistake.
What’s the discussion? On reddit, people are mainly discussing,
- whether everything happened as it seems. And that the streamer really made such a stupid and costly mistake.
- whether it might not have been a “setup” and that there is actually a well-hidden gold sale to a “Real Money Trader” (RMT). Proponents of this theory believe that the streamer attempted to cover up the sudden disappearance of 30 billion gold from his account with the public stream on Twitch. In this case, he would have instrumentalized his family to appear even more credible.
However, against the theory of “staged real gold trading” is the fact that it occurred precisely at this spot, which is excessively camped. And that by people who apparently earn so much gold with player killing that they do not need to buy additional gold.
In Runescape, there are always exciting stories. Even going AFK can be dangerously risky here:
Twitch streamer dies with hardcore character in the MMORPG because he goes AFK wrong
Update 30.8.: The Twitch clips in the article were replaced by a YouTube video.
