The well-known Twitch streamer JustAMinx was banned from Twitch yesterday after pleading with the moderators of the site not to do so. She claimed it was not her, but her demons who had said the offensive term.
What happened?
- JustAMinx is an Irish streamer who gained fame mainly through the Twitch show “Love or Host.”
- Twitch did not ban Minx for the first time. During the first ban, it was for allegedly offensive statements. She said “Simp“, which refers to someone who gives excessive attention to another person.
- Twitch is now invoking the ban hammer again. She allegedly used an extremely offensive term once more.
JustAMinx says “Cracker” and is banned for a week
This is why Minx was banned: The well-known Twitch streamer JustAMinx must take a forced break from Twitch. Twitch justifies the ban due to the apparently racist insults. In her stream, Minx repeatedly used the word “Cracker.” Cracker is generally considered an insult towards white people — by the way, Minx is white.
The current ban is already the second for Minx, which is based on derogatory remarks. In 2020, JustAMinx had to take time off because she was banned for the words “Simp” and “Incel.” Twitch had only recently added those to the list of bad words. The streamer uploaded a video on YouTube explaining why she was banned from Twitch.
When is Minx back live? Her ban lasts for seven days, meaning JustAMinx will be back on Twitch on February 14.
Are there more banned streamers? For using the word Cracker, Twitch has already banned streamers before JustAMinx. The most well-known Cracker case is probably Hasan “HasanAbi” Piker’s. In one of his streams, the outspoken anti-capitalist discussed whether Cracker has a racist background or not. The mere open debate was enough for Twitch officials to issue a ban.
The second streamer who was banned for using the C-word is named Froste and is a member of the e-sports organization 100 Thieves. The justification for Froste’s ban in December 2021 was: “Hateful speech.”
What is the origin of the word Cracker in a racist context?
Cracker or Cracka primarily refers to the poorer white rural population in the southern USA. The word is also characteristic of the early settlers in the US states of Florida and Georgia, who were maliciously referred to as Florida and Georgia Crackers back in the day.
However, which other origins may lie behind the C-word is somewhat unclear. Various sources provide different explanations as to why Cracker is racist or why it is not.
