The Twitch streamer Pia “Shurjoka” Scholz has been facing heavy criticism for weeks. Now she is filing a complaint for defamation and slander.
What is the conflict about? There have been tensions between Shurjoka and KuchenTV for some time. They had already clashed in connection with the streamer’s criticism of Harry Potter and the related game Hogwarts Legacy.
When the streamer was awarded the German Computer Game Award as Player of the Year in May, it attracted numerous critics, including KuchenTV, who believed Shurjoka did not deserve the award.
Shurjoka will take action against defamation and threats
What is the current development? In her stream from May 24, Shurjoka said that she has filed a defamation complaint with the help of a lawyer. In addition to KuchenTV, the streamer also intends to address threats of violence, including explicit threats of sexual violence.
- Shurjoka has the impression that since her criticism of Harry Potter, she has become a “target” for many. Now she is being attacked no matter what she does.
- The streamer says that whenever influencers like KuchenTV talk about her, she receives a barrage of insults, slurs, and even threats from their communities.
- She must endure discourse and other opinions, but no defamation: “I can’t handle that people put words into my mouth.”
- Shurjoka also describes a kind of vicious circle; if she responds to criticism, others use it for their content: “I can’t defend myself either, because as soon as I say something, it becomes a new YouTube video.” That then leads to further attacks from respective communities.
- Now she has initiated legal action because she feels she has no other way to help herself.
- Legitimate criticism of her is fine and even welcome.
On Twitter, she summarized her position once again:
Streamer is bothered by the claim that she is “extremist”
In particular, Shurjoka is disturbed by the designation “extremist”, as this label implies that she is anti-democratic and willing to use violence. The streamer politically identifies as clearly left, but emphasizes that extremism is not simply a catch-all term for views one disagrees with.
Shurjoka explains that she has decided, in consultation with her lawyer, to make the legal steps public. For certain content creators, it simply comes with the territory to use criminal proceedings against themselves for their own content.
Before others make the complaint public, she would rather do it herself in her own words. However, she is aware that videos will emerge again from her stream on May 24.
Exactly that happened.
KuchenTV says: “I just want her to lose”
How does KuchenTV react? The content creator reacted in a stream to Shurjoka’s statements. However, he does not take much of the accusations against him seriously. He published the hour-and-a-half reaction unedited on YouTube. We have summarized some of the most important statements for you:
- He denies having fixated on the streamer: “I just report on what there is to report.”
- In his opinion, it is Shurjoka who has defamed and ridiculed him in reactions: “She can do that about others, but when others do that about her, it’s the worst thing in the world.”
- KuchenTV denies that large parts of his community spread hatred against Shurjoka and threaten her with violence. If individual viewers behave that way, that’s “stupid” and he also hopes that the streamer will report these viewers.
- The streamer can do nothing about individual messages from his fans and cannot take action against them.
- KuchenTV says Shurjoka could have sought a personal clarifying conversation with him instead of filing a complaint.
Overall, KuchenTV stands by his statements. That Shurjoka wants to take action against him “just because of that one word” he refers to as a “clown show.” However, he admits that he could have expressed himself better.
Regarding legal consequences, the streamer remains remarkably calm: He has “the best lawyers in defamation law”.
In conclusion, KuchenTV states: “I just want her to lose.” For him, it’s very exciting, and he will keep his fans updated.
Additionally, KuchenTV published another video on May 31 about Shurjoka’s complaint, which he simply had to make. In the video, he criticizes the streamer for putting herself in a victim role and reiterates that he would have preferred a clarifying conversation.
