The streamer Max “Puppers” was known on Twitch for the horror game Dead by Daylight. He has now passed away at the age of 32. Friends, fans, and even the developers mourn him.
Who was the streamer? The Californian Max started streaming on Justin.tv, Twitch’s predecessor, in 2011. He mainly showcased League of Legends and horror games. In 2016, he found his niche on Twitch with Dead by Daylight and began streaming under the name “Puppers”.
The streamer built a loyal community with his positive and humorous demeanor. Over 200,000 people followed him on Twitch, and he reached up to 1,700 viewers at his peak. He would end his streams with the invitation “stay comfy,” which means “stay cozy.”
In 2020, Puppers was diagnosed with ALS, a degenerative condition of the nervous system that leads to muscle paralysis and eventually death.
Despite his diagnosis, Puppers continued to do what he loved: welcoming his viewers in his little corner of the internet and entertaining them to the fullest, even though his streaming times noticeably decreased in 2021.
His online friends Eshleee
, “Sunshine,” and “Silver” traveled across the country to support and care for Puppers. Together, they launched “Light in the Fog,” a streaming event to raise money for his treatment and care.
On June 2, 2023, Puppers passed away at the age of 32 after his health rapidly deteriorated.
Community mourns together
What are the reactions to his death? The news of the streamer’s death was announced on June 2 via the Twitter account of Light in the Fog.
Shortly thereafter, a post appeared on Puppers’ own account thanking everyone for the support: “Puppers/Max loved you all so much. […] Making you happy was truly what he lived for.”
Numerous fans and members of the gaming community shared their grief and good wishes, reminiscing about special moments or calling for everyone to wear his in-game charm to commemorate him.
The developers of Dead by Daylight, to whom Puppers dedicated so many hours, also publicly paid their respects to the streamer. His joy and love made the fog a better place; he was one of the brightest lights.
His friends told the BBC that there was no one who had a greater impact on their lives or the lives of many others. Caring for him was one of the greatest challenges, but also one of the greatest joys; they wouldn’t trade a moment they spent with him in the last 2 years.
The group has now started a fundraiser on GoFundMe to cover the costs of the funeral as well as outstanding expenses for his treatment. The remaining money should be used to help Sunshine, Eshleee, and Silver return to their home states.
