What kind of streamer is he? The American Nathaniel “NateBosa” Barbosa has been streaming on Twitch repeatedly since July 2021. He plays all sorts of games, from single-player titles to party games and shooters like Fortnite or Valorant. Or he chats with his viewers in “Just Chatting”.
On average, up to 12 people watched NateBosa’s streams. The streamer celebrated his first successes on a completely different platform: the video app TikTok. A clip of a conversation with his mother recently went viral, giving NateBosa thousands of followers almost overnight.
It’s hard to predict which clips will go viral.

What was the clip about? In a video from December 15, NateBosa invites his mother onto the stream. She actually comes in through the door shortly after, and the following interaction between the two is one big feel-good moment.
It starts right at the greeting – the mother greets the chat, ruffles her son’s hair, and gives him a kiss. Then she introduces herself as “Nate’s Mum,” even though she obviously looks much too young and cool for that.
The streamer explains that 9 real people are watching him and receives praise from his mother: “No bots? That’s great! […] It’s like hanging out with 9 people and you don’t even have to leave the house.”
When the mother is supposed to guess where the people watching her son are from, she exclaims for the viewers’ amusement “Korea!” NateBosa explains that she always does that; in her mind, he has 7,000 viewers. She just has big dreams for her son, the mother replies.

Millions witness touching mother-son moment
How did the clip spread? After the clip gained some attention on TikTok, it was picked up by other outlets. The US magazine Dexerto shared the footage on Twitter on December 28 and published an article on the story the next day (via Twitter).
At Dexerto, the video received over 13 million views. And at least some of those people went straight to NateBosa’s Twitch channel. Almost overnight, he gained over 32,000 new followers. During the streams after the clip went viral, up to 1,300 people were watching simultaneously (via sullygnome).
Why is the clip so well-received? Mother and son simply appear to be genuinely nice, likable people in the snippet. Their interaction also feels pleasant: the two seem to have a good relationship, the son is happy to tell his mother about his successes, and while she teases him a bit, she also celebrates with him.
This strikes a chord with viewers: Many find it lovely how supportive the mother is or say they wish they had a mother like that.
The positive attitude of the duo is also well-received. They compare the 9 viewers NateBosa has at that moment to a room where that many people are present and realize that that’s quite a lot. “That’s a great way to think about it,” writes a TikTok user (via TikTok).
By now, there is a new clip in which NateBosa and his mother react to 1,000 viewers. It has already garnered 42,000 views in 2 days (via Twitch).
The power of TikTok
Why is this exciting? Besides a touching moment, the clip also impressively shows the influence of social media.
The story has also been picked up by journalist Jake Lucky. He posted several times on Twitter about NateBosa and his mother and tracked how the follower and viewer counts of the streamer soared. “That’s the power of the internet,” said Jake Lucky.
Indeed, there are stories like this all the time where people suddenly gain unexpected fame overnight. Some people seem to aim for virality with crazy stunts, while others simply end up that way.
What ultimately goes viral is always a bit unpredictable. Especially TikTok, which has long been viewed with skepticism by many millennials, seems to be developing into a suitable medium for such successes:
