The Twitch streamer Asmongold gave his all during the stress test of WoW Classic. Together with his community, he pushed the servers to the brink of collapse. With hundreds of players on screen at once, it looked truly like an MMORPG again.
For the final stress test of World of Warcraft Classic, Blizzard urged fans to be particularly active at a specific time. They wanted to see how much load the servers could handle and when layering would need to come into play. The message was clear: Stress the realms as much as possible!
Some streamers took this as an opportunity to carry out this task. For instance, the largest WoW streamer Asmongold brought several hundred viewers along with him.
This is what happened: Asmongold’s stream lasted for several hours, but the most impressive moments of the stress test were captured on the YouTube channel “Asmongold Moments” in a nearly 50-minute video.
Especially impressive are the scenes where Asmongold gets his viewers to comply with his wishes. Hundreds of players line up to be invited into his guild (minute 19) or run “like a tornado” around him (minute 22:30).
Asmongold pushes WoW Classic servers beyond the breaking point
Server could not handle the load: The result of the immense influx was that the realms could not withstand the pressure multiple times. The server seemed to freeze repeatedly, and all characters were running in place. Accepting or handing in quests was nearly impossible – let alone meaningful fights.
Gradually, the realm seemed to be coping with it and shuffled players into different layers. This is essentially a type of sharding that is only supposed to be used at the launch of WoW Classic so that the player experience at the beginning is not too negative.
Even if you cannot relate to Asmongold as a streamer, it is impressive how many players crowded the stress test of WoW Classic and what that did to the server. It is hoped that the release in two weeks will not be as chaotic.
