Avatar: The Last Airbender is getting a Netflix adaptation. However, even before its release, the series is being dissected – including by Asmongold. One character does not behave as in the original.
After Netflix had quite a hit a few months ago with the live-action adaptation of “One Piece,” the Avatar series is next on the agenda. But a change to one of the most important characters is not sitting well with fans. Streamer Asmongold also does not hold back with his opinion. He is angry and calls the story writers of the new series “damn losers.”
What change is it about? In the original Avatar series, there is the character Sokka. The young man doesn’t think much of women and appears quite sexist at the beginning of the series. Women are constantly treated with disdain, and he doesn’t take them seriously as fighters at all. He cannot believe that he was defeated by “girls” and dismissively refers to their training sessions as “dance classes.”
However, Sokka is not supposed to have these character traits in the live-action adaptation of Avatar – a actress from the series revealed in an interview.
This is what Asmongold says: As often, Asmongold does not hold back with his opinion. He thinks the decision is wrong and puts it this way:
The character was originally sexist, who ultimately reconsiders this view and ultimately recognizes women as fighters. […]
I just love seeing the work of an artist that is liked by dozens of millions of people in the world and then gets changed for modern audiences. I thank God that we have these damn losers who change a story for people who don’t even care about it.
This is how the community reacts: Asmongold then scrolls through some comments on X (formerly Twitter), which apparently share his opinion:

- “Sokka should be a character with bad traits who grows throughout the series. I would say they offend the audience if they assume we don’t understand the concept of bad character traits, but THEY seem not to understand what that is themselves.” –
- “The fact that these scenes were meant to show children that sexist behavior is wrong, but these ‘adults’ don’t understand it, says it all.” –
For many who were looking forward to the Avatar series, the change to Sokka is quite a problem.
