Asmongold is one of the biggest streamers on Twitch, and even with his second account zackrawrr, he still makes it into the top 25. Recently, he expressed criticism about World of Warcraft. He wishes for a restart, a kind of “A Realm Reborn”.
What exactly does Asmongold demand? In a stream, he explained that WoW needs a complete restart. It has become too overloaded and too complex. New players have great trouble understanding the content. Even veterans now outsource many things to addons.
In this context, he showed two video clips comparing the buffs and debuffs of Dragonflight and WoW Classic. It is striking that in Classic there is only a single effect visible, while in retail WoW there are twelve debuffs alone. Figuring that out is not easy at all.
Asmongold then says: “I think they need to reset the game. Just reset the game completely. Realm Reborn’t the crap!”
He further demanded: “Delete the mounts from everyone, the pets, the transmogs, the toys – just delete everything. Get rid of the game that has been shaped by FOMO for 15 years and that people don’t want to jump into because they haven’t played for 15 years.”
A Realm Reborn was the salvation for FFXIV, but does WoW really need that?
What does Asmongold mean by his statement? With “Realm Reborn’t the crap” the streamer refers to the major overhaul of Final Fantasy XIV. In 2011, the MMORPG was taken offline after heavy criticism and returned in 2013 with many revisions.
However, the game lacked many fundamentals at that time, including quest logs, side quests, dungeons, enemy level displays, or an option for a customized key mapping. It was a much bigger chaos than retail WoW.
Our editor Irina Moritz has written down her experiences with the original Final Fantasy here:
Is Asmongold right with his demand? Partially, definitely. The sheer mass of content and the fact that you are at least 15 years too late scare some players away. One of them is our MMORPG author Mark Sellner, who has never played WoW himself.
Two weeks ago, we talked about this topic, and he brought up the same arguments as Asmongold: too much story, too much content, too complex, no real starting point to finally jump in.
A complete restart would surely attract some players to the world, just like WoW Classic attracted me back then.
However, whether the MMORPG needs such a radical step as Final Fantasy XIV is certainly debatable. After all, there have already been some drastic adjustments with Shadowlands, such as the leveling process and the max level. What do you think about it? Feel free to share your opinion in the comments.
Who is Asmongold anyway? Asmongold is one of the biggest streamers on Twitch. In the last 7 days, he is in 23rd place among the most viewed streamers (via Sullygnome).
He became known as a WoW nerd, but in recent years he has played through numerous other MMORPGs, including Final Fantasy XIV, New World, Lost Ark, Tower of Fantasy, and Blue Protocol.
Recently, the streamer has not only complained about the complexity of WoW but also about monetization: Twitch streamer Asmongold criticizes new microtransactions in WoW: “Blizzard has thrown in the towel”.
