The 29-year-old Twitch streamer InvaderVie got into trouble with a video clip in which she asked viewers to subscribe to her. She did not tolerate unemployment or empty wallets as excuses. Everyone can afford the 5 US dollars. Now she regrets it. She didn’t mean it that way: It would have been mean to say that.
That’s why InvaderVie is in trouble: About a week ago, the streamer InvaderVie (148,000 followers) held a 4-hour live stream on Twitch, in which she talked with her followers. Normally, the Canadian streams games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
A viewer cut a 59-second clip from this stream titled “Streamer shames viewers for not subscribing during a global crisis.”
In the clip, InvaderVie says everyone surely has enough money to support her financially with a subscription. She doesn’t ask for much; everyone can afford the 5$. Those who don’t have 5$ shouldn’t watch Twitch, but rather try to earn money.
She said this while sitting next to stuffed animals and smiling.
The clip has now received over 530,000 views and has caused some trouble. The successful Twitch streamer Felix “xQc” Lengyel called her appearance “brain-dead.” If InvaderVie wants more subscriptions, she needs to reflect on her own stream.
How has her stream developed since then? The clip has not harmed InvaderVie’s channel in the past few days. Her channel has been growing regularly by 750 to 1700 followers. It’s not that she experienced a mass exodus of her followers as a result of the stream.
“No tact, insensitive, stupid”
This is what she says now: Nevertheless, InvaderVie has now apologized. She says:
“I said things that I didn’t mean and that were mean. I see that now.”
She says the clip that so many have seen does not reflect her true views. What she said was stupid, insensitive, and lacking in tact. She cannot provide a context that explains it.
Everyone should first look after themselves and only support others when they have disposable income.
The streamer says it is not her true opinion that 5$ is not that much money. She also knows from her own experience that those 5$ can make the difference between having a roof over one’s head and a meal in one’s stomach or not.
Same streamer, totally different appearance
What stands out: Especially in comparison to the original Twitch clips, the streamer appears completely different here:
- the outfit is significantly more conservative
- the stuffed animals are gone
- facial expressions and gestures are completely different, hands are folded and rest most of the time in her lap. The smile has been replaced by a remorseful expression
- the speech is subdued
Everything fits the performance to support the message: I made a mistake. I am not like that. I am sorry.
