Tyler “Tyler1” Steinkamp is considered a real brat in League of Legends. He yells, provokes, and has even gotten himself suspended a few times. But now he’s showing heart and criticizing the camera work at the Worlds. Supporter Ryu “Keria” Min-seok was shown crying and breaking down multiple times.
What happened with Keria in the finals? In a thrilling match that required all 5 rounds to be played, T1 narrowly lost 2:3 to the Korean underdog DRX. Keria, the supporter of T1, struggled heavily with the defeat in the finals of the Worlds. He was a player for DRX himself until 2020.
He started crying towards the end of the match, which was broadcast live on stream. The camera repeatedly panned to him. After congratulating the opposing players, he slumped in his chair, shook, and began to cry bitterly.
The cameramen at the championship decided to show Keria’s breakdown and even positioned themselves very close to him and zoomed in on his face.
What does Tyler1 say about it? He expressed his frustration in a livestream. While emotions are important, the focus on Keria lasted too long for the Twitch brat, who is himself very emotional.
Tyler1 is not alone in his criticism
What exactly is the streamer criticizing? According to Tyler1, the highs and lows of a world championship must be shown. This also includes players crying. But the multiple images of Keria bothered him a lot. In his usual vulgar language, the streamer explained:
But bro, you showed it for three seconds too long, you idiot. At the point where he puts his head in his hands and starts crying, okay. When he starts physically convulsing, yes, you can show that, you degenerate.
But showing him for five seconds having a breakdown, come on, just take him off the damn camera. I hate this crap.
Afterwards, he emphasizes again that it was right to show Keria. The emotions are part of E-Sports. But it was simply too long.
What do others say about the images? On Reddit, many LoL players agreed with Tyler1’s statements. One says: “I think if they had shown him crying for a few moments, that would have been fine. But it felt like they cut back to him a few times and that seemed unnecessary to me.”
Another even says that the celebration from DRX was far too small. There was a wrong balance between the losers and the winners.
As a positive counterexample, an interview between Dyrus and Sjokz was mentioned on Reddit. At that time, the moderator hit exactly the right point to stop asking questions and let the pro take his time.
How did the players react? Even Keria’s teammates seemed to find it excessive, especially when the cameramen positioned themselves right in front of the player.
Oner, for example, positioned himself between Keria and the camera. Gumayusi blocked the other side, as a video from Razorkismo on Twitter shows. There is also criticism for the camera work under this video.
How do you see the situation? How important are emotions, and can showing the images go too far? Or should a pro be able to handle such things?
Tyler1 himself recently criticized the superstar Faker in a livestream. What exactly happened, we will reveal here:
