The Twitch streamer MontanaBlack had an average of 49,953 viewers in 2021, at the height of his career, when he went live on Twitch. By 2023, his viewer count has halved.
How have MontanaBlack’s numbers developed?
- In 2021, significantly boosted by the Corona lockdown, MontanaBlack had an average of 49,953 viewers and was on air for 1,234 hours. This corresponded to 61.7 million viewer hours. With these values, he ranked first in the main categories of German Twitch.
- Looking at the last 90 days of 2023, when MontanaBlack streamed regularly on Twitch again, his average viewer count is 24,966. This corresponds to a decline of 50.02%.
- The 35-year-old has lost about every second viewer compared to 2021.
Open crates in CS:GO instead of role-playing in GTA 5
What is the reason for this? There is certainly a clear pandemic effect. During 2020 and 2021, due to corona-related lockdowns, the numbers of many Twitch streamers increased.
There is also a change in the games. The gaming market has shifted in the last 2 years, which many streamers, including MontanaBlack, have to respond to.
- In 2021, MontanaBlack spent most of his time in “Grand Theft Auto 5”, where he was playing role-play on private servers. This was extremely popular among fans: When MontanaBlack played GTA, he had an average of 60,840 viewers. Similar numbers were seen when he played “Mario Kart 8”. Besides GTA 5, he played CoD Warzone, FIFA 22, and Fortnite.
- In the last 90 days, he has been increasingly active in CS:GO on Twitch, where MontanaBlack is primarily known for opening crates and hoping for rare skins. This likely caters to the gambling faction. However, only half as many people watch him compared to when he used to play GTA 5.
- Even the viewers who watch him in “Just Chatting” and want to listen to his wisdom, have halved compared to 2021.
It may not be gambling, but it’s close: MontanaBlack “plays” CS:GO:
10 years younger Berlin streamer overtakes MontanaBlack
Who has overtaken him? We reported on MeinMMO in June 2022 that streamer Elias Nerlich has finally surpassed MontanaBlack.
In fact, Elias Nerlich was able to slightly increase his numbers compared to 2021:
- In 2021, Elias Nerlich had an average of 24,243 viewers
- In the last 365 days on Twitch, since he overtook MontanaBlack back then, the Berliner managed to reach an average of 31,056 viewers. This corresponds to an increase of 28%.
Nerlich achieved this by expanding his offerings:
- In 2021, Elias N. mostly showed games from the “FIFA” series, along with 300 hours of “Just Chatting”
- In the last 365 days, Nerlich has nearly doubled his share of “Just Chatting” but was able to average 6,000 more viewers than when he previously showed “non-gaming” content
Is EliasN an exception? Yes, indeed. Of the 5 largest Twitch streamers in Germany, only EliasN was able to increase his average viewer count over the past year. All others have declined:
- MontanaBlack lost 36.6% of his viewers in the last 365 days compared to the previous period
- Knossi lost 19.3%
- For GRONKH, it was only minimally fewer viewers at 1.7% – Gronkh benefited from a controversy surrounding Hogwarts Legacy in February
- Trymacs was in a worse position with 13.6%

Is MontanaBlack angry with Nerlich? No, while MontanaBlack struggles with many “newcomers” on Twitch that only chase after quick money.
However, he has explicitly excluded Elias Nerlich from this criticism. He wishes him success. Nerlich has “the strength and energy” – the Twitch streamer would make him and others happy.
