Michael “MckyTV” Doleys (31) received a lot of criticism for his plan to say goodbye with a Subathon from Twitch. Now he is backing down. What the future holds for the content creator, you can find out at MeinMMO.
What is the situation regarding MckyTV?
- Mcky was one of the larger streamers on German Twitch for a long time, streaming an average of 5 to 6 days a week for 7 hours over the last 4 years (via TwitchTracker)
- The streamer announced his retirement from Twitch on March 31, 2024, wanting to make a big splash with a Subathon as a farewell
- Many viewers and other content creators criticized Mcky’s plan, claiming he was emotionally blackmailing his audience – Gronkh called the plan “disgusting”
What is the new development now? On Saturday, April 6, Mcky released a statement on YouTube. In it, he explained that he would not be disappearing completely from Twitch and that no one should feel pressured to financially support the Subathon.
In a stream the next day, Mcky then canceled the Subathon entirely, instead there will now be a big farewell event.
Criticism from Gronkh will likely sting, as the streamer is seen as somewhat of a “big brother” of the internet for many.
XXL Event instead of Subathon
What is Mcky’s statement? In the nearly five-minute video, the streamer explains that he has taken the criticism following his announcement to heart and does not want to ignore it. Now he wants to reassure his fans: According to Mcky, no one has to pay for the Subathon to continue watching him.
Because the streamer has been running the non-monetized second channel Michilurk since 2021, where gaming is done at will. On this channel, he wants to continue streaming even after his departure – but in a completely relaxed manner and no longer as a full-time content creator.
The Subathon was still supposed to mark the end of Mcky’s streaming career: after that, he would no longer be a Twitch streamer and would only occasionally make an appearance. The project was supposed to run indefinitely, and any support was completely voluntary. “I don’t want to put anyone under pressure,” Mcky said.
However, the reactions apparently did not turn out as Mcky had hoped. In a stream, he addressed comments under the video, eventually stating that the Subathon would not take place as planned after all. Otherwise, it would leave a bad aftertaste, the streamer explained. If subs came in, he would always have the criticism in the back of his mind.
What should the farewell look like now? Instead of a Subathon, where the completed subscriptions from viewers would extend the duration of the streams, there should now be a big event. The “XXL Event” is supposed to run over a set, longer period, possibly until the end of the year.
Content-wise, not much should change from the planned Subathon: Mcky wants to invite streaming colleagues to his house in Madeira, produce content together with them, and provide entertainment around the clock. For example, there will be a LAN win challenge, cooking streams, and cool projects.
Similar to the original plan, fans should have the opportunity to financially support the event if they wish to do so. Mcky explains that the event would cost him a lot of money since he would be flying in friendly streamers and setting up equipment for them. The Subathon had originally been planned to cover these costs.
The entire announcement can be found on Mcky’s Twitch channel.
Finally, Mcky reiterates that he can certainly understand the criticism of his announcement. He has thought about it a lot in recent days and is taking suggestions into account in his planning.
For his “final” farewell, Mcky also has big plans: German Twitch streamer takes inspiration from One Piece, wants to send fans on a treasure hunt after his death
